Trabalhando no Parque Ecológico

Na semana passada fomos ao Parque Ecológico do Funchal para colaborar no trabalho de controlo de plantas invasoras que o "Projeto Puffinus" está a desenvolver. Os trabalhos estão centrados na giesta (Cytisus scoparius), uma espécie invasora que está a proliferar rapidamente nas serras e está a deslocar as espécies autóctones.

 Neste caso está a ser desenvolvido um método químico de controlo, drilling. Uma pessoa faz um furo no tronco da planta a 15 cm como máximo do solo, ao tempo que sem demorar muitos segundos outra pessoa aplica dentro do furo o herbicida com ajuda de uma seringa. O objetivo é matar a planta com o mínimo volume de herbicida, realizando uma aplicação direta de forma a não prejudicar o resto das espécies e o ambiente envolvente.

Este processo realiza-se com varias concentrações de forma a obter dados para a otimização do processo.

Destaca-se que o dia que trabalhamos no Parque fez um bom dia, e fizemos o almoço fora desfrutando do ambiente, mas no dia seguinte, a Sole, que voltou ao Parque a continuar com o trabalho, apanhou neve no mesmo lugar. Durante a ultima semana as temperaturas baixaram muito e parece que a primavera está a demorar em chegar!    

Working in the Ecological Park

During the past week we went to Funchal ecological park to collaborate in the control program of invasive plants, which is carried out by the "Puffinus Project". The main work is focused on the common broom (Cytisus scoparius), an invasive species which is thriving quickly in the mountains and is displacing some native species.



In the framework of the program is being developed the drilling, a chemical method to control the plant's proliferation. A person makes a small hole in the trunk of the plant, maximum 15 centimeters above the soil. Just after few seconds, without loosing time, a second person puts the herbicide inside the hole with a syringe. The aim is to kill the plant with the smallest amount of herbicide, applying directly the substance in order to preserve the other species and the surrounding environment.
This process takes place with different amounts of concentration (of the herbicide) in order to collect data to optimize the work.





During the day we have been working in the park, the weather was really nice and quite warm, and we enjoyed having lunch outdoors. Anyway, on the following day, Sole came back to the park to keep doing the job and she got a glimpse of the snow, which fell abundant. During the last week it got colder and it seems spring still didn't show up!

Durante esta semana vou desenvolver o meu serviço no Parque Ecológico do Funchal, no âmbito do Projeto Puffinus. Os trabalhos desenvolvidos têm a ver com a conservação da área de nidificação do Patagarro (Puffinus puffinus) com ações de combate de espécies vegetais invasoras, e também com ações de controlo de predadores. Com estas ações intenta-se que o patagarro continue a escolher as encostas da Ribeira de Santa Luzia para fazer os seus ninhos. A partir da segunda quinzena de Janeiro espera-se a chegada do patagarro, é por isso que os trabalhos em referência a este projeto estam a ser mais intensos nesta altura.

Além, na área do Parque desenvolvem-se ações de restauração do terreno que foi destruído pelos incêndios. Sementeira de espécies nativas e endémicas, eliminação de indivíduos mortos, e estudo sobre o combate das espécies invasoras são as ações principais na recuperação do ambiente natural do Parque.

 

Week in Funchal Ecological Park

During this week I will develop my service in Funchal Ecological Park, under Puffinus Project. The developed works have to do with conservation the nesting area of patagarro (Puffinus puffinus) with actions to combat invasive plant species, and also shares the control of predators. With these actions it intends that the patagarro continue to choose the slopes of Ribeira de Santa Luzia to make their nests. From the second half of January is expected the arrival of patagarro, which is why the work in reference to this project to be more intense this time.
In addition, in the park area are developed actions to restore the land that was destroyed by fire. Seeding of native and endemic species, removal of dead trees, and study on combating invasive species are the main actions in the recovery of the natural environment of the Park.
