Esta semana tivemos a segunda viagem de barco. Durante dois dias, eu e a Isabel fomos às Ilhas Desertas fazer a contagem de aves marinhas. Vimos muitos golfinhos, almas-negras, cagarras, garajaus, patagarros e uma espécie que nunca tinha visto: Rabijunco. Esta ave que se reproduz em Cabo Verde, não é comum na ilha da Madeira. Concerteza estaría em migração e tivemos a sorte de vê-la a voar.
Durante estes dois dias que estivemos em redor de ilhas desertas dormimos no barco perto da costa. Fomos acompanhados pelo grande capitão Pescanova Marco, que nos preparou um delicioso jantar! Obrigado mais uma vez Marco!
Na manhã seguinte aconteceu uma coisa engraçada: pelas 8 horas, estávamos todos tomando o café enquanto navegávamos. De repente, surgiu uma pequena tempestade e uma onda enorme deixou-nos completamente encharcados. O café que estava segurando em minhas mãos e o do Marco caíram no mar. Sem duvida, uma boa maneira de acordar!

This week was the second part of the boat trip. During 2 days, Isabel and me were in DesertasIslands doing the count birds. We saw a lot of delphins, Almas negras, Cagarras, Garajaus, Patagarro and a species that I had never seen: Rabijunco. This bird is not common on the island of Madeira, which nests near of Cabo Verde. Surely, the bird would be immigrating. So we were lucky to see him flying.
During those two days we were around of deserted islands and we slept on the boat near the coast. We were accompanied by the great captain Pescanova Marco, which prepared us a delicious dinner! Thanks again Marco!
In the morning a funny thing happened: We were taking the coffee at 8 a.m while we were sailing. Suddenly, we were trapped in a small storm and a huge wave drenched us completely. The coffee that I was holding in my hands to be full again and the coffe of Marco fell into the sea.
Como diz o título, voltei à "tempestade verde" para um outro passeio de barco, na segunda e terça-feira. Mas desta vez, gostei muito mais, pois senti-me muito bem durante os dois dias. Pude contar as aves pela primeira vez e gostei muito da experiência! Estou apenas no começo e tenho muita dificuldade na identificação das espécies. Claro, que posso distinguir entre uma Cagarra e uma Gaivota, ou até uma Alma Negra (se for muito perto do barco :-)), o difícil é a identificação das outras aves. Temos de ser rápidos a ver e identificá-las, escrevendo muito depressa quando há um grande número de aves na mesma área. Mas, como disse, estou apenas no começo e tenho a certeza de que nos próximos tempos já vou estar melhor.
Nestes dias, o mar estava muito calmo, daí eu ter gostado tanto desta viagem de barco, também porque vi uma grande colónia de "cagarras", voando ao pôr do sol na mesma área onde era possível ver 5-6 golfinhos com os seus típicos saltos fora de água. Vimos também cachalotes, baleias-piloto e duas tartarugas!
Para mim foi uma grande aventura, pois não é comum ver estas espécies na vida quotidiana. Finalmente, quero agradecer ao Marco, Cátia e David, um fotógrafo profissional que se juntou à embarcação na terça-feira, pela boa companhia durante a viagem.

Like the title I chose, I came back to”the green storm” for another boat trip on Monday and Tuesday. This time I enjoyed it to the best way, since I felt very well both two days. So, I could count the seabirds for the first time, and I liked so much that! Yes, I am only at the beginning, and I have a lot of difficulties about the identification of the species. Of course, I can distinguish between a Cory Shearwater and a gull, like I can identify an Alma negra (if it’s very close to the boat :-) ). The difficult thing is the identification of the other birds, and you have to see and identify them, writing very fast when there are a lot of birds in the same area. But, I said it, I’m only at the beginning and I am sure that next times I will be better in this work.
In these days the sea was very calm, so I liked so much this boat trip, also because of I saw a great colony of “cagarros”, flying in the sunset in the same area where I could see above 5-6 dolphins in their typical jumping out of the water. We saw also sperm-whales and pilot-whales. And two turtles, too!
For me it has been a great natural adventure, since it’s not common to see these species in the everyday life. Finally, I want to thank Marco, Catia and David, a professional photographer that joined to the boat on Tuesday, for the good company during the travel.
Nas últimas duas semanas tivemos muitas experiências tanto no mar como em terra!
Na terça-feira, 9 de Março, começou a nossa aventura a bordo da tempestade verde! A Cátia, o Costantino e eu fomos recebidos pelo Marco (o melhor capitão do mundo, chamado por nós "Capitão Pescanova"). Grande experiência de 2 dias em torno das Ilhas Desertas! A Cátia ensinou-nos algumas aves como a "Cagarra" e a "Alma Negra" e como fazer a contagem de aves. Obrigado Cátia! Vimos muitas aves marinhas e golfinhos (sim! golfinhos! No seu habitat natural), fomos apanhados no meio de uma pequena tempestade (navegar a 80 km/h não é mau, não?), comemos deliciosas "tortillas" (o que pensas Costantino?), saladas e massas à bolonhesa graças a Cátia e ao Marco e dormimos no navio no porto! Obrigado Marco pela grande viagem!
Na semana seguinte foi a vez de vivermos experiências nas montanhas. Durante toda a semana estivemos trabalhando na nossa próxima actividade, que começa no próximo 28 de Março. Temos procurado, nas montanhas, pontos de boa visibilidade da paisagem para vermos a ave “Galinhola”. A melhor coisa é que a partir desses pontos nós podemos ver paisagens espectaculares e percorrer grandes extensões de "Floresta Laurissilva da Ilha da Madeira" (uma espécie de floresta subtropical declarada Património da Humanidade). Estivemos em Santana, Ponta Delgada, Machico, São Jorge, etc...
Aqueles foram dias difíceis, conduzindo com a Cátia, mas, sem dúvida, voltaria sem pensar duas vezes!

Hi! The last two weeks we have had many experiences both sea and land!
On Tuesday9 Marcoh began our adventure on board the green storm! Cátia, Costantino and I were greeted by Marco (The best captain in the world called for us “Captain Pescanova”). Great experience for 2 days around the DesertedIslands! Cátia taught us some birds like “Cagarra” and “Alma negra” and how to make the count bird. Thanks Cátia! We saw many seabirds, dolphins (yes! Dolphins! in their natural habitat), we were caught in the middle of a small storm (navigate to 80km / h is not bad, no?), ate delicious “tortillas” (what do you think Costantino?), salads and pasta Bolognese thanks to Cátia and Marco and slept on the ship at a seaport! Thanks Marco for the great trip!
The following week was turn to live experiences in the mountains. During all the week we were working on our next activity which will starts the next 28 of March. We have searched in the mountains, points from where there is good visibility of the landscape to see the Galinhola fly. The best thing is that from these points we could see spectacular landscapes and walk through large tracts of “Floresta Laurissilva da Ilha da Madeira” (a kind of subtropical forest declared Humanity Patrimony). We were in Santana, Ponta Delgada, Machico, Sao Jorge, etc…
Those were hard days driving with Cátia, but undoubtedly I would return without a second thought!
Esta semana tem sido repleta de actividades interessantes na SPEA. Na 2ª-feira à noite associei-me a uma contagem nocturna com a Cátia, Isaac e Fabrício. Este é um importante projecto da SPEA, através do qual pretende-se estudar o impacto da iluminação pública nas aves. Fomos até a Ribeira da Janela e Porto Moniz efectuar as contagens de aves marinhas. Este trabalho de campo consiste na realização de um censo de todas as espécies de aves, identificadas pelo som e pela observação directa. Gostei muito desta experiência, para mim é maravilhoso observar a indumentárias branca dos "Puffinus", a voar na noite escura. Apesar de durante este período não ser fácil encontrar muitas aves, observámos aproximadamente 10 aves, no meu ponto de contagem. Depois disso, bebi uma “cerveja” madeirense com os meus amigos da SPEA. Cheguei a casa cansado mas satisfeito, foi uma excelente noite.
Mas, a experiência "real" nestes dias foi, naturalmente, a contagem de aves marinhas do barco. Na quinta-feira, acordei de manhã cedo, porque o Isaac e eu tinhamos de nos encontrar com a Cátia na "Marina" para seguirmos no barco. Conhecemos então o “Green Storm” (Tempestade Verde) e o nosso skipper Marco, um rapaz muito alegre e um óptimo comandante.Partimos do Funchal para alcançar as ilhas Desertas, que têm este nome devido ao facto de não possuírem quaisquer habitantes, excepto dois vigilantes que lá trabalham. Neste projecto, a SPEA realiza a contagem de aves, recorrendo à técnica dos transectos. Posso dizer que a identificação da espécie não é lá muito fácil, porque só temos alguns segundos para identificar uma espécie particular, mas graças à ajuda da Cátia, tenho a certeza que vou aprender muito em breve. Ela é uma boa ornitóloga e nunca se cansa de me ajudar no trabalho.
No final do dia, surgiu um vento intenso com cerca de 42,5 nós, segundo nos disse o Marco. Agora, olhando para a tabela de conversão do vento, posso dizer que foi mesmo muito intenso (80 Km/h). As ondas estavam muito altas e eu estava assustado devido aos movimentos do barco. Para mim foi como uma tempestade, não “verde”, mas uma tempestade. Mas o Marco é um grande capitão e conseguiu afastar-nos do mau tempo, rumando até ao Caniçal, em segurança. Obrigado, Capitão! Por último, jantámos todos no barco, comida italiana: spaghetti alla Bolognesa! Muito bom! Esta refeição teve mais sorte do que a “tortila "que tirei do meu estômago depois de almoçar, pois a minha digestão foi rebelar-se contra as ondas do mar.
No dia seguinte, o tempo continuou mau e voltamos para o Funchal, onde estava um clima perfeito, dia de sol e mar calmo. É muito estranho observar como o vento pode mudar tanto numa pequena distância, como é o espaço entre o Caniçal e Funchal. Enfim, esta experiência tem sido muito cheia de emoções para mim, e da próxima vez espero que o tempo esteja melhor, porque eu quero estar no meu melhor para fazer a contagem de aves.
Hoje, somos quatro no escritório. Na verdade, a nossa chefe, Isabel, chegou ao escritório da SPEA após um mês nas Selvagens. Bem-vinda Isabel!

This week has been very full of interesting activities for me at Spea. On Monday night I joined to a nocturnal bird count with Catia, Isaac and Fabrício. This is an important project of Spea, which is studying the impact of public illumination on birds. We went to Ribeira da Janela and Porto Moniz to count the seabirds’ species. The field work consists on the census of all the seabird species, identifyedt by song and observation. I really enjoined that, for me it’s marvellous looking at the white livery of “puffinus”, flying in the dark of night. Even if in this period was not very easy to find a lot of birds, we observed more or less ten birds, in my count point. After that, I drank a madeiran “cerveja” with my Spea friends; I arrived at home tired but satisfied, it was a really nice night.
But, the real “experience” on the field in these days has been, of course, the seabirds count from the boat. On Thursday, I woke up in the early morning, because Isaac and I had to meet Catia at the “Marina” to take the boat. So we met the “Green Storm” boat and its seaman, Marco, a really joyful boy and a very good skipper. We have departed from Funchal to reach Desertas islands. This name is due to the fact that these islands have not any inhabitants, except two persons that work there. In this project Spea realizes the bird count throughout the technique of transects. I can say that the identification of the species is not very easy, because we have few seconds to identify a particular specie but, thank to the help of Catia, I’m sure that I’ll learn very soon. She’s a good ornithologist and she’s never tired to help me in the work. At the end of the day, there was an intensive wind expecting us, it was 42.5 nodes as Marco said me. Now, looking at the conversion table of the wind (80 Km/h), I can say that it was really intensive. The waves were really high and I was afraid with the movements of the boat. For me it was like a storm, and of course this one was not a “green” storm. But, Marco is a great skipper, he has been very quite to lead us away from the bad weather, so we reached Caniçal to dock the boat. Thank you, Captain! Finally, we had dinner together on the boat, and there was Italian food: spaghetti alla bolognesa! Really good! This food has been luckier than the “tortilla” that I put away from my stomach after the lunch ‘cause my digestion was rebelling against the sea waves.
The day after, there was a very bad weather and we have returned to Funchal, where there was a perfect weather, sunny day and calm sea. It’s too strange observing as the wind can change so much in a little distance like it’s the space between Caniçal and Funchal. Anyway, this experience has been very full of emotions for me, and the next time I hope the weather will be better, because I want to join in the best mood to the bird count.
Today, we are four at the office. Indeed, Isabel, our “boss” , reached us at the Spea office, after one month in Selvagens. Bem-vinda Isabel!
