Passeio de barco (Parte 2) / Boat trip (part 2)

Esta semana tivemos a segunda viagem de barco. Durante dois dias, eu e a Isabel fomos às Ilhas Desertas fazer a contagem de aves marinhas. Vimos muitos golfinhos, almas-negras, cagarras, garajaus, patagarros e uma espécie que nunca tinha visto: Rabijunco. Esta ave que se reproduz em Cabo Verde, não é comum na ilha da Madeira. Concerteza estaría em migração e tivemos a sorte de vê-la a voar. 

Durante estes dois dias que estivemos em redor de ilhas desertas dormimos no barco perto da costa. Fomos acompanhados pelo grande capitão Pescanova Marco, que nos preparou um delicioso jantar! Obrigado mais uma vez Marco!

Na manhã seguinte aconteceu uma coisa engraçada: pelas 8 horas, estávamos todos tomando o café enquanto navegávamos. De repente, surgiu uma pequena tempestade e uma onda enorme deixou-nos completamente encharcados. O café que estava segurando em minhas mãos e o do Marco caíram no mar.
Sem duvida, uma boa maneira de acordar!

This week was the second part of the boat trip. During 2 days, Isabel and me were in Desertas Islands doing the count birds. We saw a lot of delphins, Almas negras, Cagarras, Garajaus, Patagarro and a species that I had never seen: Rabijunco. This bird is not common on the island of Madeira, which nests near of Cabo Verde. Surely, the bird would be immigrating. So we were lucky to see him flying.

During those two days we were around of deserted islands and we slept on the boat near the coast. We were accompanied by the great captain Pescanova Marco, which prepared us a delicious dinner! Thanks again Marco!

In the morning a funny thing happened: We were taking the coffee at 8 a.m while we were sailing. Suddenly, we were trapped in a small storm and a huge wave drenched us completely. The coffee that I was holding in my hands to be full again and the coffe of  Marco fell into the sea.

A good way to wake up!

Dias luminosos / Bright days

Esta semana foi repleta de trabalho de campo interessante.

Em primeiro lugar, na manhã de Sábado participei no V Censo de Mantas e, juntamente com o Isaac, passeei pela cidade para observar as Mantas (Buteo buteo). Infelizmente, o tempo não era o melhor e não observamos qualquer indivíduo. No Domingo fomos até a Festa da Flor, uma festa típica do Funchal: uma espantosa exibição de cores da Madeira.

Na Segunda-feira, juntamente com a Cátia e o Isaac, fui para o Paul da Serra, não sem antes adquirir algumas galinhas mortas no centro da avicultura as quais, em seguida, foram colocadas em diferentes pontos ao longo das linhas eléctricas, de modo a testar a capacidade de detecção dos cadáveres no campo. Iniciámos a nossa participação neste projecto esta semana, através do qual a SPEA monitoriza a presença de aves mortas nas linhas eléctricas. Assim sendo, no dia seguinte fomos à Ponta de São Lorenço para procurar as aves mortas presentes. Mas não vimos lá nada!! Com certeza, estava lá a galinha morta que a Cátia e o Fabrício colocaram lá na segunda-feira, mas não vimos nada. No final da primeira caminhada na Ponta de São Lourenço, o Isaac disse-me: "Nós perdemos o corpo". No começo, imaginei que provavelmente ele estaria muito cansado ... Depois apercebi-me que não tínhamos sido capazes de ver o bebé frango sem sorte. Ok! Espero que tenha sido uma boa refeição para outro animal.

No mesmo dia à tarde, trabalhámos num outro projeto, no qual a SPEA estuda o impacto da iluminação pública em aves, especialmente nas espécies marinhas. Fomos para Machico e anotámos todos os tipos de estruturas de iluminação pública e as suas coordenadas de GPS. Nunca havia percebido antes o grande número de luzes na Madeira.

This week was full of interesting field work. 

First of all, on Saturday morning Isaac and I joined the V Censo de Mantas and we went for a walk in the city to observe the Common Buzzard (Buteo buteo). Unfortunately, the weather was not good and we didn’t observe any individuals. On Sunday we went to flower festival, a typical festival of Funchal: an amazing  display of Madeira  colours.

On Monday, Cátia, Isaac and I went to Paul de Serra, trying to buy  some dead chickens at the aviculture center;  then We placed them in different points along the electric lines, just to test our ability in search for the carcasses in the field. Indeed, in this week we began to work in this project by means of  which Spea monitors the presence of dead birds under the electric lines. So, the next day we went to Ponta San Lorenzo to search for any present dead bird. But nothing was there. For sure, there was a dead chicken that Catia and Fabricio put there on Monday, but we didn’t see anything.  At the end of the first walk in Ponta San Lorenzo, Isaac said me: “We lost the body”. At first, I imagined that probably he was really tired… After I realized that we weren’t able to see the unlucky baby chicken. Ok, I hope that it was a good meal for another animal.

On the same day, in the afternoon, we worked on another project: in this one Spea studies the impact of public lighting on birds, especially the migratory and nocturnal species. So, we went to Machico to take note of all the kinds of public lighting structures, and their GPS coordinates. I never realized before the huge number of lights in Madeira.

Linhas Eléctricas e Iluminação Pública / Electric Lines and Public Ilumination

Esta semana começamos a ajudar em dois projetos que a SPEA está a desenvolver. Na segunda-feira estivemos na Ponta de São Lorenço trabalhando no projecto das linhas eléctricas. Durante este projecto pretendemos aferir de que forma as linhas eléctricas estão a afectar as aves da Madeira, pois esta é uma das suas principais causas de morte. 

 
Dentro do projecto da iluminação pública, estivemos em Machico a fazer um levantamento de todos os tipos de iluminação lá existentes. Este projecto é particularmente importante pois as aves noturnas são guiadas pela luz, o que muitas vezes causa a sua desorientação, e consequente morte. Por agora estamos a identificar as luzes mais prejudiciais de modo a mudá-las no futuro.

Na próxima semana iremos continuar com estes projectos porque neste momento a Cátia está em férias e precisamos da sua ajuda para continuar a fazer estes estudos. Boas férias, Cátia!

This week we have started to help in two projects in which SPEA is working. On Monday we were at the Ponta de São Lourenço working on the project of power lines. During this project we check how the power lines are affecting at birds in Madeira because it is a one of major cause of death.

On the other hand, inside of the public illumination project, we were in part of  Machico checking all the types of public lights that exists. Nocturnal birds are guided by the light receiving and a lot of time, the public illumination may cause the birds were disoriented causing his death. So, in this moments we are working in this point to know which light are affecting negatively and try to change it in the future.

The next week we will work in this projects because in this moments Cátia is in holidays and we need her help to continue doing this study. Have a good holidays Cátia !!!

A "Tempestade Verde" 2 / The GreenStorm 2

Como diz o título, voltei à "tempestade verde" para um outro passeio de barco, na segunda e terça-feira. Mas desta vez, gostei muito mais, pois senti-me muito bem durante os dois dias. Pude contar as aves pela primeira vez e gostei muito da experiência! Estou apenas no começo e tenho muita dificuldade na identificação das espécies. Claro, que posso distinguir entre uma Cagarra e uma Gaivota, ou até uma Alma Negra (se for muito perto do barco :-)), o difícil é a identificação das outras aves. Temos de ser rápidos a ver e identificá-las, escrevendo muito depressa quando há um grande número de aves na mesma área. Mas, como disse, estou apenas no começo e tenho a certeza de que nos próximos tempos já vou estar melhor.

 
Nestes dias, o mar estava muito calmo, daí eu ter gostado tanto desta viagem de barco, também porque vi uma grande colónia de "cagarras", voando ao pôr do sol na mesma área onde era possível ver 5-6 golfinhos com os seus típicos saltos fora de água. Vimos também cachalotes, baleias-piloto e duas tartarugas!

 
Para mim foi uma grande aventura, pois não é comum ver estas espécies na vida quotidiana. Finalmente, quero agradecer ao Marco, Cátia e David, um fotógrafo profissional que se juntou à embarcação na terça-feira, pela boa companhia durante a viagem.

Like the title I chose, I came back to”the green storm” for another boat trip on Monday and Tuesday. This time I enjoyed it to the best way, since I felt very well both two days. So, I could count the seabirds  for the first time, and I liked so much that! Yes, I am only at the beginning, and I have a lot of difficulties about the identification of the species. Of course, I can distinguish between a Cory Shearwater and a gull, like I can identify an Alma negra (if it’s very close to the boat :-) ). The difficult thing is the identification of the other birds, and you have to see and identify them, writing very fast when there are a lot of birds in the same area. But, I said it, I’m only at the beginning and I am sure that next times I will be better in this work.

In these days the sea was very calm, so I liked so much this boat trip, also because of I saw a great colony of “cagarros”, flying in the sunset in the same area where I could see above 5-6 dolphins in their typical jumping out of the water. We saw also sperm-whales and pilot-whales. And two turtles, too!

For me it has been a great natural adventure, since it’s not common to see these species in the everyday life. Finally, I want to thank Marco, Catia and David, a professional photographer that joined to the boat on Tuesday, for the good company during the travel.

Semana de férias / Holidays week

Após uma semana de trabalho duro... nada melhor que uma semana livre! Durante a semana de férias tive a minha primeira visita! A Manuela da Áustria! Temos viajado ao redor da ilha, visitando o Caniçal, Machico, Santana, Ponta de São Lourenço, São Vicente e cada canto da cidade do Funchal!.
Estivemos no Porto Santo durante dois dias ... Adorei esta ilha! Água límpida, areia dourada ... o paraíso! Fizemos também um pouco de "trecking".. Tentámos atravessar uma montanha por uma rota mais curta, mas não foi o mais indicado ... Num momento pensei que não conseguiríamos sair de lá! Um monte de cactos à nossa volta numa rocha localizada 3 metros acima do solo, sem ser capaz de voltar! Muita adrenalina! Obrigado Manuela pela tua visita!

Fizemos ainda um piquenique em Santana com a Zara! Imensa comida deliciosa enquanto olhávamos para o mar, rochas, e cheirando a erva limpa e molhada.. Espectacular! Obrigado Zara!
E agora, é hora de voltar ao escritório! Até a próxima semana!

After a week of hard work ... what better than a free week! During the week of holiday has been sharing with me this week my first visit! Manuela from Austria! We have been travelling around the island, visiting Caniçal, Machico, Santana, Ponta de Sao Lourenço, Sao Vicente and every corner of Funchal!

We were in Porto Santo during two days…I love this island!!! Clear water, golden sand…the paradise!!! We were also doing a bit of "tracking" .. we tried to cross a mountain by a shorter route but not noted ... At one point I thought that we couldn’t get out of there! A lot of captus around us, on a rock to 3 m above the ground without being able to go back! A lot of adrenaline! Thanks Manuela for your visit!

 Also we were doing a picnic in Santana with Sara! A lot of delicious food watching the sea, the rocks, smeeling the clean and wet grass..Great!!! Thanks Sara! 

And now, is time to return at office!! See you the next week!!
