Viagem às Desertas / Travel to Desertas

Nos dias 3 e 4 Julho, eu e o Costantino estivemos na Deserta Grande com o barco Ventura do Mar e mais 14 que participaram nesta actividade da SPEA. A viagem foi uma oportunidade única para observar as aves marinhas, em particular as cagarras, freiras, garajaus e almas-negras.

Quando chegámos à Deserta Grande, fomos por um trilho até ao topo da ilha, guiados por dois vigilantes do Parque Natural da Madeira. Levámos cerca de três horas a percorrer este perigoso trilho. Após a descida, chegamos à praia situada nesta área natural para arrefecer e apreciar a paisagem.

Quando o sol começou a deixar-nos, era hora de apanhar energia e fazer o jantar. Enquanto alguns estavam a preparar a espetada, outros tiveram a oportunidade de conhecer a reserva natural um pouco melhor.

Após o jantar, ouvimos cagarras, almas-negras e roques-de-Castro. Nesta ilha nidificam muitas aves e muito fácil vê-las perto do seu ninho, inclusivamente com um pouco de sorte conseguimos chegar muito perto delas!

On 3 and July 4, Costantino and I were on the island in the Deserta Grande on the Ventura Sea boat with 14 people more that participated in this activity. The trip was an opportunity even to observe seabirds, in particular was possible to identify Cagarros, Freiras, Garajau and Almas negras.

We were walking around Deserta Grande, led to a warden of Ecological Park. It was around three hours.

After the dangerous walk Carried, we arrived at the beach that offers this natural area to cool and enjoy the scenery. As the sun began to leave us, it was time to take energy and make dinner. While some were preparing the espetada, others had the opportunity to know the natural reserve a little better.

After dinner, we heard Cagarras, black souls and Roque Castro. They nest on this island and to live many birds and is very easy to watch them very closely and if you have a litle luck you can make a few strokes!

Para as Desertas no barco / On “Desertas” by boat

Na segunda-feira fomos de barco para três dias de transectos em torno das Ilhas Desertas. É a primeira vez que fui na viagem de barco por mais de dois dias. Foi duro, mas já passou. Agora trago comigo as marcas desta viagem, pois a minha pele está um pouco queimada, mas não é problema, não é nada.

Desta vez dormimos duas noites perto da Deserta Grande, onde pude ver a casa dos guardas, uma infra-estrutura que falei aqui numa mensagem antiga. No próximo fim-de-semana vamos para visitar o solo desta ilha, que bonita oportunidade!

On Monday we went for a “3 days transect” around Desert Islands. It was the first time that I joined more than two days on a boat, and was hard. But also this one is passed out, even if I bring on my skin the marks of that trip. Indeed, my face was a little bit on fire, but no problem, it's nothing.

This time we spent two nights really close to the land of the Desertas Grande Island, and I saw the warden house located there, a wooden house which I talked about here a few messages ago. Next weekend I'll visit again this island, and for the first time I will make my steps on the land. Amazing!

A Trabalhar no LIFE SOS Freira do Bugio / Working inside of LIFE SOS Freira do Bugio

Na semana passada estive no escritório a preparar um folheto informativo para o seminário que será realizado a 29 de Julho no Funchal, onde se irá debater especificamente sobre o projeto "SOS Freira do Bugio LIFE", no qual estamos a trabalhar com a SPEA.

Lembrem-se que a Freira do Bugio é uma ave endémica que só nidifica nas Ilhas Desertas e sua existência está em perigo de extinção. Por outro lado, esta é uma actividade livre onde podem inscrever-se todos os interessados! Não  percas!

Last week I was in the office preparing a informative “flyer” for the seminar will be held next July 29 in Funchal where will talk specifically about the project "LIFE SOS Freira do Bugio" in which we are working with SPEA.

Remember that Freira do Bugio is endemic bird that nests only in the “Ilhas Desertas” and the existence is in endangered. On the other hand it is a free activity and can register all those interested! Don’t miss it!

Pesquisando ninhos / Searching nests

Durante esta semana, a SPEA, em colaboração com a SEO-Birdlife, organizou um seminário, sobre uma ave de rapina, o Fura-bardos. No primeiro dia, escutámos com muito interesse a apresentação do Domingo, um ornitólogo espanhol que trabalha nas ilhas Canárias. Após uma introdução sobre a biologia e identificação desta espécie, fomos dois dias para o campo. Durante o segundo dia observámos três indivíduos, especialmente um macho em voo, a uma boa distância pela observação com os binóculos. Uma característica particular desta espécie é que a fêmea é cerca de 25% maior que o macho, uma das grandes diferenças dos sexos no mundo das aves.

No último dia, caminhámos durante algumas horas na montanha, pesquisando ninhos de Fura-bardos mas não tivemos muita sorte. Apesar disso, encontrámos restos de um melro, provavelmente consumido por um Fura-bardos.

Estes dias têm sido muito interessantes do ponto de vista ornitológico, porque foi um prazer falar com o Domingo, que tem um grande conhecimento sobre as aves.

Assim espero que a SPEA organize uma outra actividade como esta, antes da minha partida.

During this week Spea, in collaboration with SEO-Birdlife Spain, realized a three days-seminar about the Eurasian Sparrowhawk. The first day spotted on biology and identification of this species, clearly explained by the expert, Domingo, a Spanish ornithologist working in Canary Islands. The next two days we stayed on the field. During the first one we made a point count, in which we observed 3 times this bird. We were lucky especially for the last time that we saw a male flying, from a good distance for a good view by binoculars. This species has a peculiar characteristic: the female is up 25% larger than the male, one of the largest differences between the sexes in any bird species.

After that, during the last day, we walked a lot to search any tracks of Sparrowhawk nest. We could not find a nest, but we found a rest of a bird, probably a Black Bird, preyed by Sparrowhawk.

By the way, these days were particularly interesting from a ornithological point of view. Indeed, it was very exciting listen to the explanations by Domingo, he has a great knowledge about birds.

So, I hope that Spea could organize other seminars or activities like this before my departure, I won't never be tired to learn about my winged friends.

Quem é o Roquinho? / Who is Roquinho?

A copa do mundo 2010 comecou a semana passada, mas o Roquinho nao é o nome de um grande jogador Brasileiro. A verdade é que este é o nome de uma ave, o Roque-de-castro (Oceanodroma castro), chamado Madeiran Storm Petrel em inglês. Estou a escrever sobre esta espécie porque começou a sua temporada de nidificação e então estamos a trabalhar especialmente para detectá-la. Esta semana fomos fazer escutas e tive sorte, porque logo na primeira noite consegui ouvir o Roquinho 13 vezes. E também passou uma ave sobre a nosssa cabeça, muito perto de nós, provavelmente uma Alma-negra ou Roque-de-castro. Penso que ele queria dizer-me “Olá, meu amigo” :). Que linda é a  Ponta de Sao Lourenço, um lugar que nunca perde a sua magia. Realmente, parece um outro planeta.

Na próxima semana vamos participar num curso de formação sobre uma ave de rapina interessante: o Fura-bardos (Accipiter nisus). Esta é uma actividade da SPEA em colaboraçao com a SEO-Birdlife. Tenho a certeza que será muito interessante aprender mais sobre esta espécie.

World Cup 2010 started in South Africa last week, but Roquinho is not the name of a great Brazilian football player which I would like to talk about. Indeed, Roquinho is the name of a bird species, the Madeiran Storm Petrel (Oceanodroma castro). Another Portuguese name of this species is Roque-de-castro, but I prefer the first one I wrote. I'm writing about this bird because its reproductive season began just now, so we focused our efforts about it. I was lucky because I’ve listened to this species song just during the first night I worked. We stayed in Ponta São Lourenço, a place that never loses its magic. Really, it seems another planet.

Also, a bird, probably a Storm Petrel or a Bulwer's Petrel, passed over my head, very close to me. I think that perhaps he wanted to say me “Olà” :)

Next week we're going to join a training course about a interesting bird of prey: the Sparrowhawk (Accipiter nisus). This is an activity in collaboration with SEO-Birdlife Spain. I'm sure that it will be amazing learning about it.
