Salve uma Ave Marinha/Save a seabird

No sábado passado pudemos assistir a uma palestra destinada a um grupo de jovens escoteiros sobre a campanha “Salve uma Ave Marinha”. A nossa colega Cátia Gouveia falou, entre outras coisas, da importância da divulgação desta problemática à população e existência de brigadas de patrulhamento, atividade altamente recomendada para aqueles que gostem da natureza e querem dar uma mão a esta boa causa.

Last Saturday we attend a talk aimed at a group of young boy scouts on the campaign “Save a seabird”. Our colleague Cátia Gouveia spoke, among other things, about the importance of disseminating information to the rest of the population and the existence of rescue squads, a highly recommended activity for those engaged with nature and wants to lend a hand to this good cause.

Parque Ecológico do Funchal/Funchal Ecological Park

Durante esta semana, juntamente com o grupo SPEA, fomos até ao Parque Ecológico do Funchal, onde fizemos a identificação com lupas dos insetos recolhidos com o método dos quadrados e pitfall nos aeroportos da Madeira e Porto Santo. Numa atmosfera amigável passámos a manhã classificando Coleópteros, Dípteros, larvas de insetos, caracóis, formigas... Uma variedade de pequenos bichos que fazem parte da fauna da Madeira!

During the last week, with SPEA group, we went to Funchal Ecological Park, where we identified with loupes the insects that we’ve collected with squares and pitfall methodology at the airports. In a friendly atmosphere, we spent the morning sorting beetle, flies, insect larvae, snails, ants ... a big variety of small bugs that belong to the fauna of Madeira!

Trabalho em Porto Santo/ Work in Porto Santo

Na semana passada estive três dias no Porto Santo fazendo censos de aves no aeroporto. É a segunda vez que  tive a oportunidade de visitar a ilha. Devido à mudança de horário, há mais horas de sol e portanto, mais horas de observação. Pude ver gaivotas, pombos, francelhos, canarios, garças... e a minha ave favorita, a poupa!

Desta vez, o tempo estava muito melhor. Não pude mergulhar mas fiz um agradável passeio na praia.

Last week I was in Porto Santo for 3 days doing bird censuses in the airport. It is the second time I had the opportunity to visit the island. Now, we have an extra hour of sun and that means more hours of observation. I could see seagulls, pigeons, kestrels, canaries, herons... and my favorite, the hoopoe!

This time the weather was better. I could not swim but I could take a nice walk on the beach.

Porto Santo-Ilhéu de Cima

As últimas  semanas têm sido repletas de emoções! O mau tempo foi definitivamente o protagonista. Chuva, vento e grandes ondas. No final, sobrevivemos a todas as contrariedades e, agora, recordamos os momentos com um sorriso nos lábios ;)

Na próxima semana, estarei de volta ao Porto Santo, mas espero que desta vez o tempo esteja melhor. Aproveitarei para ir à praia e tomar um mergulho relaxante.

It has been a week full of emotions! The weather was definitely the protagonist. Rain, wind and big waves. In the end, we survived all setbacks, and now we remember with a smile what happened there ;)

Next week I will return to Porto Santo but I hope this time the weather would be better. I’ll try to go to the beach and take a relaxing swim.

Viagem a la Ilha Selvagem/ Travel to Selvagens Islands

No passado mês de março tive a oportunidade de passar duas semanas na Selvagem Grande! De facto, foi espetacular a sensação de desconexão do mundo, estando no meio do Atlântico a trabalhar com os pintainhos (Puffinus baroli).

O pior foi a viagem de barco! Longas horas de agitação, mas valeu a pena!

Agora tenho saudades das pessoas, do mar, dos jogos de cartas… e especialmente da Selvagem, a cadela que, acima de tudo, era uma grande colega!

Foi uma experiência inesquecível!

The last month of March I had the opportunity to spend two weeks in the Selvagem Grande Island! It was spectacular the feeling of disconnection from the world, while spending time in the middle of the Atlantic working with the Barolo Shearwater (Puffinus baroli). 

The worst was the boat trip! Long hours and rough sea, but worth it!

Now I miss the people, the sea, and card games ... especially Selvagem, the dog that was a great colleague!

It was an unforgettable experience!
