Wandering in the colonies

Os últimos dois meses foram cheios de trabalho de campo, sem dúvida um dos aspectos mais divertidos dos nossos projectos.

The last two months have been full of fieldwork, one of the most funny aspects of our project without any doubts.

No passado mês de Março tivemos no Ilhéu Chão (Ilhas Desertas) para a procura de pintainhos, Puffinus lherminieri e finalmente os encontramos! Não apanhamos muitos animais mas mesmo assim ficamos contentes de saber que poucos indivíduos estão ali, sendo essa uma boa noticia para o projecto LIFE Recover Natura que esta a decorrer.

During the past month of March we visited the Chão Islet (Desertas Islands) looking for Audubon's shearwaters Puffinus lherminieri  and eventually we found them! We didn't collect many birds, but we are satisfied to know that few individuals are possibily breeding there, which is a good news for the on-going LIFE project.

Em Abril, não satisfeitos, voltamos à colónia para verificar o estado da mesma. Notamos mudanças na actividade, muito menos intensa que no mês anterior. Mesmo assim, ainda uns poucos indivíduos estavam ali, o que é um bom sinal.

During April, not totally pleased, we went back to the colony to verify its status. We did notice differences in the activity, which was extremely less high than March. Anyway, few members were still present, which is a good sign. 

Ilhéu Chão e Deserta Grande

Neste último mês tivemos a possibilidade de monitorizar a mais seguida e conhecida colónia de pintainhos no Ilhéu de Cima de Porto Santo. Esta colónia está ser estudada há 4 anos ao abrigo do projecto LIFE Ilhéus de Porto Santo. A colónia parece gozar de boa saúde, tendo sido a actividade elevada e continua durante as noites todas que estivemos ali.

During the last month we also went monitoring the best known shearwater colony of Cima Islet in Porto Santo. This colony has been studied since 4 years thanks to the LIFE project Ilhéus de Porto Santo. It seems it has a good status, with high activity during the whole time we spent there.

Com as nossas últimas estadias acabou o tempo do ano dedicado aos pintainhos, mas damos os melhores parabéns as nossas colegas para a próxima temporada de campo nas colónias! 

With our last visits, fieldwork for this shearwater species is ended for this year, but we wish the best to our colleagues for the next fieldwork season at the colonies!

Visita ao Ilhéu do Desembarcadouro

No passado mês de Fevereiro estivemos no Ilhéu do Desembarcadouro a prospetar uma potencial colónia de Pintainhos Puffinus lherminieri, no âmbito do projeto LIFE Recover Natura. Infelizmente, não conseguimos encontrar nenhum sinal indicativo da presença destas aves, provavelmente devido ao número elevado de gaivotas Larus michaellis que nidificam ali. Mesmo assim, conseguimos aproveitar a estadia neste ilhéu, que oferece vistas inesquecíveis sobre a Ponta São Lourenço, o ilhéu do Farol, as Ilhas Desertas e, com alguma sorte, o Porto Santo.

Durante o dia aproveitámos para explorar o ilhéu e tentar encontrar algum sinal importante para identificar a possível presença das aves. Apesar de não termos encontrado nenhuma evidência de qualquer ave marinha, este ilhéu está a ser alvo de um programa de erradicação de ratos o que poderá contribuir para que, futuramente, ocorra um maior sucesso reprodutor das aves pelágicas que nidificam no arquipélago da Madeira. Durante a noite prospetámos toda a área potencial e ficamos a fazer escutas nas partes mais baixas do ilhéu. Só conseguimos ouvir limícolas e muitas gaivotas (altamente barulhentas!).

Esperar que as aves regressem à colonia à noite é uma experiencia cheia de emoções, onde conseguimos aproveitar o silêncio, a tranquilidade e a magia da natureza. Este é o momento do qual mais gosto, onde se alia o barulho do mar, do vento e da terra! São nestes instantes que nos damos conta que, apesar dos esforços, o nosso trabalho é muito bonito! Na minha opinião todos teríamos de ter a  oportunidade de experienciar um trabalho noturno numa colónia de aves marinhas para se aperceber dos sortudos que somos!   

Desembarcadouro Islet visit

During the past month of February we have been visiting the Desembarcadouro Islet to prospect a potential colony of Audubon Shearwaters Puffinus lherminieri, in the framework of Recover Natura LIFE project. Unfortunately we didn’t find any signs which can confirm the presence of these birds, probably due to the high number of Yellow-legged Gulls which breed there. Anyway we did have the opportunity to enjoy our stay in this islet, which offers unforgettable spots of Ponta São Lourenço, Farol islet, Desertas islands and, being lucky, Porto Santo Island.

During the day we took advantage to explore the islet to try to find any important signs to identify the possible presence of the birds. Despite not having found evidences of any seabird species, this island is object of a rat eradication program, which can contribute to a higher future reproductive success of the pelagic birds breeding in Madeira archipelago. During the night we prospected the whole potential area and we made some listening points in the lower parts of the islet. We only heard waders and several gulls (which are really noisy!).

Waiting for the birds to come back at night is an experience full of emotions, and we can enjoy the silence, the quiet and the magic of the nature. This is my favourite moment, when the sounds of the sea, the air and the earth merge! These are the instants when we realize that, despite the efforts, our job is really nice! In my opinion we all should get the opportunity to experience a nighttime job in a seabird colony to realize how lucky we are!

O Ilhéu do Farol

Nova estadía no Ilhéu do Farol na Ponta de São Lourenço. Desta vez não faltou vento, chuva e frio, mas como sempre a contrapartida de paisagens que poucas vezes se conseguem ver. Sons, vistas, cheiros e sensasões que só se conseguem ter nestes exclusivos lugares. Obrigada Albino pela companhia e o trabalho em equipa!

This time there was no lack of wind,rain and cold, but we were lucky enough to admire the stunning landscapes around us. Sounds, sights, smells and feelings that only can be part of these unique places. Thank Albino for the company and team work!

Back to Desertas Islands 

Durante duas semanas, no passado mês de Janeiro, fomos às ilhas Desertas para dar início à monitorização dos pintainhos Puffinus lherminieri.

During two weeks of the past month of January, we have been at Desertas Islands to start monitoring the Audubon’s Shearwater Puffinus lherminieri 

Os pintainhos já chegaram em Dezembro e no âmbito do projeto LIFE Recover Natura estamos a tentar localizar colónias da espécie em zonas de intervenção (Ponta do São Lourenço, Deserta Grande, Ilhéu Chão). 

Shearwaters already prospected colonies in December and we are trying to discover any colonies of this species in the target areas (Ponta do São Lourenço, Deserta Grande, Chão islet) in the framework of the LIFE project Recover Natura.

Durante o tempo que passámos lá tivemos a possibilidade de explorar dois lugares (Doca na Deserta Grande e a subida do Ilhéu Chão). Estivemos procurando entre as rochas de diferentes dimensões, explorando os buracos todos que poderiam ser ninhos potenciais. Encontrámos algumas aves marinhas mortas, entre as quais, as almas negras Bulweria bulwerii e cagarras Calonectris borealis, e algumas vivas, como os roques-de-castro Hydrobates castro. Lastimavelmente não conseguimos encontrar sinais que confirmem a presença dos pintainhos. 

During the time we spent there we visited two places (Doca in Deserta Grande and the ascension in Chão islet). We have been searching among rocks of different sizes, exploring all the burrows which could be potential nests. We found some dead birds, as Bulwer’s petrel Bulweria bulwerii and Cory’s shearwater Calonectris borealis, and other which are breeding right now, as Madeiran Storm Petrel Hydrobates castro. Unfortunately we did not find any signs which confirm the presence of Audubon’s Shearwater.

Aproveitámos a ocasião para realizar escutas durante a noite para detetar a presença destas aves. Ouvimos somente os roques-de-castro, cuja população de inverno encontra-se agora na fase de alimentação das crias. Em ambos os lugares de monitorização tivemos a possibilidade de ouvir também corujas-das-torres Tyto alba schmitzi e gaivotas-de-patas-amarelas Larus michaellis. A grande presença destas últimas no Ilhéu Chão e a forte poluição luminosa da costa Sul da Madeira (com muitos holofotes dos campos de futebol) podem representar a maior ameaça para estas aves marinhas de média dimensão. A espécie parece ser muito vulnerável aos principais perigos em terra e no mar. 

We made several night listening points to detect the presence of these birds. We only heard Madeiran Storm Petrels, which winter population is feeding the chicks. In both monitoring places we could also hear Barn owl Tyto alba schmitzi and Yellow-legged gull Larus michaellis. The high abundance of these predators in Chão islet and the strong light pollution of the South coast of Madeira (with several floodlights of football fields), could represent the greatest peril for these medium-size seabirds. The species appears to be extremely vulnerable to main threats both at sea and on land.

No arquipélago da Madeira até agora foram estudadas as colónias do Porto Santo e das Selvagens e será interessante comparar os dados destes dois lugares com os obtidos nas áreas alvo do projeto LIFE.

Up to now in the Madeiran archipelago they have been studied Porto Santo and Selvagens colonies and it could be interesting to compare data of these places whit the ones of the LIFE project’s areas. 

Durante estas duas semanas tivemos o apoio fundamental dos vigilantes da natureza, que nos ajudaram no trabalho à noite e nas operações de desembarque. Também pudemos participar nas outras ações do projeto como a monitorização dos morcegos, assim como no controlo da falaria Phalaris aquatica, uma planta invasora que se encontra no topo da ilha, na localidade da Castanheira, e que está a conduzir à perda de habitat da tarântula. 

During these weeks we received the precious support of the wardens of the Natural Park of Madeira, who helped us during work at night and in the disembarkation. We could also take part in other project actions as the bat monitoring and the control of bulbous canary-grass Phalaris aquatic, an invasive plant which could be found in the top of the island, (in Castanheira locality), and is contributing to the loss of habitat of the tarantula.

Claramente não podemos esquecer de referir que nos sentimos sortudos com a oportunidade de trabalhar nestas belas ilhas, um autêntico paraíso natural e que em Março de 2014 teve o importante reconhecimento do Diploma Europeu das Áreas Protegidas.

Obviously we cannot forget to say we felt very lucky to have the possibility to work in such stunning islands, a pristine natural heaven which was awarded in March 2014 with the European Diploma of Protected Areas. 

We wait with desire and enthusiasm the next stay!
