Gracias y hasta pronto SP

Há exatamente três meses começava a minha experiência aqui, na SPEA.

No dia 15 de setembro entrei no escritório nervosa, entusiasmada e com vontade de aprender coisas novas. Hoje 19 de dezembro, vou embora feliz, grata e com a esperança de que os nossos caminhos voltem a encontrar-se.

Escolhi vir para a SPEA porque reunia tudo o que procurava: e equilíbrio entre trabalho de campo, que permite um contacto direito com o ambiente, e a educção ambiental, através da qual é possível divulgar a importância da proteção da natureza e dos animais que nela vivem. 

Ao longo destes três meses tive a oportunidade de participar em diferentes atividades de sensibilizaçõ nas quais percebei a importância de trasmitir à população informação essencial sobre as aves marinhas, os seus problemas e como podemos ajudá-las. Também participei no projeto STOP Predators, onde pude observar de perto as ameaás que afetam estas aves, bem como conhecer melhor o seu comportamento. 

A campanha "Salve uma ave marinha" foi, sem dúvida, o momento mais esperado da minha estadia. Duante quase duas semanas fizimos patrulhas nnoturnas à procura de aves marinhas, especialmente a cagarra (Calonectris borealis). Poder ver estas aves de perto e dar-lhes uma segunda oportunidade foi uma experiência profundamente reconfortante, algo que nunca esquecerei. 

Por  último, a  possibilidade de comparecer a escolas, como parte do trabalho de educação ambiental desenviovido pela SPEA, permitiu.me conectar comos mais jovens e comprovar a importância de plantar a semente de cônsciencia desde idades precoces. Sem duvida, uma experiência que levo comigo e que reforça a minha vocação.

Exactly three months ago, my experience here at SPEA began.

On September 15th, I walked into the office feeling nervous, excited, and eager to learn new things. Today, December 19th, I leave feeling happy, grateful, and hopeful that our paths may cross again in the future.

I chose to come to SPEA because it offered everything I was looking for: a balance between fieldwork, allowing direct contact with the natural environment, and environmental education, through which the importance of protecting nature and the animals that inhabit it can be shared.

Throughout these three months, I had the opportunity to take part in various awareness-raising activities, where I realized how essential they are for conveying vital information to the public about seabirds, the challenges they face, and how we can help protect them. I also participated in the STOP Predators project, where I was able to observe up close the threats affecting these birds and gain a deeper understanding of their behavior.

The “Save a Seabird” campaign was, without a doubt, the most anticipated moment of my stay. For nearly two weeks, we carried out nighttime patrols in search of seabirds, especially the Cory’s shearwater (Calonectris borealis). Being able to see these birds up close and give them a second chance was a deeply rewarding experience, one I will never forget.

Finally, the opportunity to visit schools and high schools as part of SPEA’s environmental education work allowed me to connect with younger generations and see firsthand the importance of raising awareness from an early age. It is, without a doubt, an experience I will carry with me and one that reaffirms my vocation.

Até breve, SPEA!

E assim, quase sem dar por isso, chegamos ao fim deste estágio na SPEA Madeira. Foram dois meses que passaram incrivelmente rápido, mas que acima de tudo foram extremamente enriquecedores. Ao longo deste período, estive sobretudo envolvido nas atividades da Campanha Salve Uma Ave Marinha, realizada sempre nesta altura do ano, que procura salvaguardar os juvenis de aves marinhas pelágicas afetados pela poluição luminosa. 

Em setembro, juntamente com as colegas de trabalho ao abrigo do Corpo Europeu de Solidariedade, estive no terreno a realizar uma campanha de sensibilização mais direta, quase “porta a porta”. Nos municípios aderentes visitei diversos estabelecimentos, tanto públicos como privados, desde restaurantes e hotéis a complexos balneares, onde demos a conhecer a nossa iniciativa, as espécies envolvidas e o que fazer caso encontrem uma ave. Gostei muito deste contacto próximo com as pessoas, e fiquei realmente feliz ao ver que cada vez mais gente está sensibilizada para o tema e disposta a aprender como proteger o grupo de aves mais ameaçado do planeta. Tive ainda a oportunidade de acompanhar o Manuel numa visita à colónia de cagarras, inserida no projeto STOP Predators. Nessa manhã o trabalho consistiu essencialmente na anilhagem e pesagem dos juvenis! 

Por fim, chegou aquele que talvez fosse o momento mais aguardado deste estágio: a campanha de resgate dirigida essencialmente aos juvenis de cagarras, que decorreu entre 23 de outubro e 5 de novembro. Enquanto membro do staff da SPEA, tive, tal como os meus colegas, as funções de ajudar na organização das equipas, enviar lembretes e, quando necessário, servir de motorista. Gostei imenso de participar, com a sensação clara de que estávamos a contribuir para uma ação importante de conservação. Tive a sorte de acompanhar brigadas em vários locais e, mesmo não tendo resgatado nenhuma ave pessoalmente, pude assistir a algumas sessões de anilhagem no Garajau. Outro ponto alto foi conhecer voluntários de tantas partes do mundo e partilhar com eles momentos de convívio, como o encontro no Parque de Santa Catarina. 

Para concluir este texto, quero dizer que adorei a experiência de estágio na SPEA Madeira. As minhas partes preferidas foram, sem dúvida, o trabalho de campo, tanto na sensibilização como nas campanhas, e levo daqui boas memórias, novas amizades e muito mais conhecimento sobre este magnífico grupo de aves marinhas. Até à próxima, SPEA Madeira.

And so, almost without realizing it, we have reached the end of this internship at SPEA Madeira. Two months that passed incredibly quickly, but above all were extremely enriching. Throughout this period, I was mainly involved in the activities of the Save a Seabird Campaign, carried out always at this time of year, which aims to rescue juvenile pelagic seabirds affected by light pollution.

In September, together with my co-workers under the European Solidarity Corps, I was in the field carrying out a more direct awareness campaign, almost “door to door”. In the participating municipalities, I visited several establishments, both public and private, from restaurants and hotels to beach complexes, where we presented our initiative, the affected species, and what to do if they find a bird. I really liked this close contact with people, and I was truly happy to see that more and more people are aware of the topic and willing to learn how to protect the most threatened group of birds on the planet. I also had the opportunity to accompany Manuel on a visit to the shearwater colony, part of the STOP Predators project. In that morning the work consisted essentially of ringing and weighing the juveniles!

Finally, the moment that was perhaps the most awaited of this internship arrived: the rescue campaign directed mainly at juvenile shearwaters, which took place between October 23 and November 5. As a member of the SPEA staff, I had, just like my colleagues, the tasks of helping to organize the teams, sending reminders and, when necessary, serving as a driver. I really enjoyed taking part, with the clear feeling that we were contributing to an important conservation action. I was fortunate to accompany teams in several places and, even without having rescued any bird personally, I was able to watch some ringing sessions in Garajau. Another highlight was meeting volunteers from so many parts of the world and sharing with them moments of socializing, such as the gathering at Santa Catarina Park.

To conclude this text, I want to say that I loved the internship experience at SPEA Madeira. My favorite parts were, without a doubt, the fieldwork, both in awareness-raising and in the campaigns, and I take with me good memories, new friendships, and much more knowledge about this magnificent group of seabirds.
