Semana no Porto Santo

Ate três semanas fomos à ilhéu do Porto Santo para trabalhar nas colonias e no aeroporto. Os primeiros três dias ficamos no Porto Santo e trabalhamos no aeroporto, fazendo o censo das aves. A metodologia é fácil. Fizemos o censo nos primeiros quinze minutos de cada hora, desde amanha ate a tarde. Os dados que recolhemos foram a presencia das diferentes espécies das aves, a direção do voo e o comportamento. As observações são feitas em dos pontos diferentes da pista para cobrir mais o menos a totalidade da área. No dia seguinte usamos a mesma metodologia fazendo as observações na torre do controle da pista. Também fizemos a monitorização das comunidades de invertebrados com pitfall. É importante ver a distribuição de invertebrados para saber quares são as áreas onde há maior concentração das aves.

Nos últimos três dias fomos a Ilhéu de Cima para monitorar as colonias de pintainhos. O trabalho desenvolve-se durante a noite quando as aves voltam as colonias para descansar. Agora, na esta época do ano, alguns ninhos já têm ovo. Fizemos uma monitorização dos ninhos e encontramos dois novos. Pusemos três loggers nos ninhos mais "seguros", os ninhos onde ficava o ovo. A experiencia de estar num lugar tão bonito foi inesquecível e aguardo com interesse a próxima vez. 

Week in Porto Santo

Three weeks ago we went to the islet of Porto Santo to work at colonies and in the airport. The first three days we stayed in Porto Santo and we worked in the airport, carrying out birds' census. The methodology is simple. We undertook the census in the first fifteen minutes of each hour, from morning until evening. The data we collected are useful to analyze the presence of different species of birds, their direction on flight and their behaviour in the runway. Observations are made in two different points of the runway in order to cover the entire area of study. In the following day we used the same methodology, but we changed the place, this time observing the runway from the watchtower. We also carryed out the monitoring of insects' populations with pitfall. It is important to see the insects' distribution in order to know which areas potentially have a bigger confluence of birds' species.

During the last three days we went to Ilhéu de Cima to monitor the colonies of little shearwater. The work takes place at night when birds come to land to rest. In this period of the year, some nests already have the egg. We monitored all the nests and we found two new nests. We then attached three loggers in some nests we arleady know they have their egg. The experience to be in such a nice and peaceful place has been unforgettable and I am looking forward to coming back.
