Educação ambiental

Um grande papel que desempenho na SPEA, e aquele de que mais gosto, é o de ir às escolas dar palestras para crianças de todas as idades, sobre temas como “Fura-bardos e o seu habitat”, “Aves marinhas e poluição luminosa” e “Bisbis e aves da Laurissilva”.

Apesar de ainda ficar nervosa antes de uma palestra, as crianças tornam o ambiente bem divertido, com perguntas inocentes e engraçadas e partilhando as suas histórias. Por vezes, também os professores e auxiliares fazem perguntas e mostram bastante interesse pelos temas.

Nas minhas primeiras palestras não estava à espera que os miúdos soubessem tanto acerca das problemáticas que vou falar às escolas, mas para meu grande espanto, até os mais pequeninos já estão sensibilizados para alguns destes problemas e são bastante participativos nas palestras, com respostas válidas e ideias muito bem articuladas. É muito bom saber que as escolas estão cada vez mais envolvidas na sensibilização dos seus alunos e eu sinto-me privilegiada em poder fazer parte disso e transmitir uma mensagem importante que é a preservação do meio ambiente.

Dentro das palestras fazemos atividades com os miúdos, principalmente observação de aves com binóculos e o telescópio, mas aquando da palestra sobre as aves marinhas construímos Cagarras móveis em papel que depois podem ser penduradas pela escola.

Com esta tarefa, apercebi-me de que a educação ambiental é uma ferramenta importante na divulgação do trabalho realizado pela SPEA e no apelo para que tomem medidas minimizadoras das problemáticas que apresentamos, sendo elas a poluição, a degradação dos habitats, as espécies invasoras, as aves encandeadas, entre outros. Desta forma, encorajamos as crianças a plantar espécies de árvores e plantas nativas em casa ao invés de espécies introduzidas e invasoras, a não deitar lixo na natureza e fazer a sua separação e reciclagem e ainda abordamos os procedimentos a seguir quando encontramos uma ave marinha encandeada. Muitas destas ideias já estão presentes na educação das crianças, mas é sempre bom reforçar que todos nós devemos zelar pelo nosso planeta e cuidar dele, pois é a nossa única casa e a das gerações que ainda estão por vir.

A big role I play at SPEA, and the one I enjoy the most, is to go to schools to give lectures to kids of all ages, on themes such as “The Sparrowhawk and its habitat”, “Seabirds and light pollution” and “Madeira Firecrest and birds of Laurissilva”.

Although I still get nervous before a lecture, the kids make the environment fun with innocent and funny questions and sharing their stories. Sometimes teachers and helpers also ask questions and show a lot of interest in the subjects.

In my firt lectures I did not expect the kids to know so much about the problems I talk about at schools, but to my surprise, even the little ones are already aware of some of these problems and are very participative during the lectures, giving valid answers and very well-articulated ideas. It is great to know that schools are getting more and more involved in raising awareness of their students and I feel privileged to be part of this and pass on an important message being that is the preservation of the environment. In the lectures we do activities with the kids, mainly birdwatching with binoculars and the telescope, but when speaking about seabirds, we build a mobile Cory's Shearwater that can later be hung at school.

With this task, I have come to realize that environmental education is an important tool in promoting the work carried out by SPEA and in the call for them to adopt minimizing measures of the problems we present, such as pollution, habitat degradation, invasive species, the effects of light pollution on seabirds, among others.  That being said, we encourage children to plant native trees and plants at home instead of exotic and invasive ones, to not throw garbage in the nature and to separate and recicle it, and we also adress the procedures to follow when we come across a seabird blinded by the lights. Many of theses ideas are already present in the kids education, but it is always good to reinforce that we must al look after our planet and care for it because it is our only home and that of the generations that are yet to come.
