Se já saiu à noite, é possível que tenha visto uma pequena criatura a voar por ali. Quando o mundo está quieto e a recuperar de um dia agitado, os morcegos saem das suas tocas e fazem o seu trabalho. Por vezes, os morcegos têm má reputação, pois alguns associam-nos a doenças ou a vampiros sugadores de sangue. Aqui estão alguns motivos para adorar os morcegos, porque eles realmente tornam este mundo um lugar muito melhor!

Superdisseminadores

Os morcegos são polinizadores importantes (a palavra difícil para a polinização das plantas pelos morcegos é quiropterofilia). Ao contrário das abelhas, a maioria das espécies de morcegos são atraídas por plantas com flores claras (como a manga, a goiaba e a bananeira) em vez das mais coloridas. É por isso que a biodiversidade de espécies é tão importante, porque cada espécie tem um papel único no ecossistema. Para além da polinização, alguns morcegos também espalham sementes pela paisagem, contribuindo assim para a reflorestação. Comem fruta e depois defecam as sementes que não conseguiram ser digeridas.

Inseticidas naturais

Os morcegos têm uma dieta de insetos e, por isso, ajudam a evitar que comam muitas culturas e espalhem agentes patogénicos. Têm, por isso, um papel muito importante na agricultura. Infelizmente, devido à elevada utilização de pesticidas atualmente, os morcegos estão a passar por dificuldades, pois isso afeta a disponibilidade de alimento.

Para proteger os morcegos, precisamos de proteger a noite!

If you ever went out at night, it's possible that you have seen a tiny creature flying around. When the world is quiet and recovering from a busy day, bats leave their burrow and do their work. Bats sometimes have a bad reputation as some associate them with diseases or blood sucking vampires. Here are some reasons to love bats, because they actually make this world a way better place!

Superspreaders

Bats are important pollinators (the difficult word for pollination of plants by bats is  chiropterophily), they move from plant to plant to have some sweet nectar and thereby spread pollen and fertilise the plants. Unlike the bees, most bat species are attracted to plants with pale flowers (like mango, guava and banana) instead of the more colorful ones. This is why biodiversity of species is so important, because each species has an unique role in the ecosystem. Besides pollination, some bats also spread seeds across the landscape, hereby contributing to reforestation. They eat fruits and later poop out the seeds that could not get digested. 

Natural insecticides

Bats have a diet of insects and thereby help keep insects from eating too many crops and spreading pathogens. They thus have a very important role in agriculture. Unfortunately, due to the high use of pesticides these days, bats are having a hard time as this impacts food availability. 

In order to protect the bats, we need to protect the night!
