Dia RAM

The RAM day is a network of observation of birds and marine mammals that began in the coasts of the Cantabrian and Galicia and after this beginning it extended to the Iberian Peninsula, including the Portuguese coast and the archipelagos of Madeira and the Azores. The species that can more easily be observed are the yellow-legged gull and the Cory's shearwater, although other species such as the Tern or the Balearic shearwater are also seen.

This project aims to coordinate data collection throughout the Atlantic coast by volunteer observers who enjoy the study of seabirds and in this way improve knowledge and conservation of Atlantic seabird species. An important feature of these censuses is the use of a standard methodology for the collection of information, that is, the simultaneously observation allows systematic and rigorous information to be obtained and an idea of the abundance and movements of seabirds In coastal waters, in different geographic areas and in different months.

The next day RAM will be on May 6 from Porto Monitz. Participation is voluntary and is open to all who have an interest and knowledge about seabirds. If you are interested contact SPEA Madeira through Facebook <https://www.facebook.com/spea.madeira/#> or email <madeira@spea.pt> and we will give you more information.

Madeira is famous for its great plant biodiversity, in fact is known as the Atlantic Garden.
So the first thing I did as soon as I had free time was went to the Botanical Garden.  There are several ways to arrive to the garden: bus, taxi, cable car or on foot.

I chosed the last one because I wanted to explore the area and to do a Little bit of exercise.

The first thing that I have to say is that going on foot can be a bit hard  if you aren’t a sporty person, due to the great slope that exists, but the views during the walk are amazing

After 45 minutes walking I arrived at my destination, I was able to enjoy a great variety of vegetable species of all kinds.
In addition to the plant species, I also saw a large number of birds such as: Eurasian goldfinch (Carduelis carduelis) , eurasian blackcap (Sylvia atricapilla),  Eurpoean robin (Erithacus rubecula), Atlantic canary (Serinus canaria), Common kestrel (Falco tinnunculus), and the Madeiran chaffinch (Fringilla coelebs maderensis).
I can thoroughly recommend to visit this place because you will enjoy an amazing surroundings.

Censos marinhos

In order to estimate abundance of  seabird populations and occurrence, sea censuses are carried out from different ships. In these censuses the observer is located at a fixed point in the ship and counts the different birds that he finds and his behaviour. It is very important to mark the time and the coordinates of the beginning and end of transect, while the boat maintains direction and constant speed. In this way the speed of the boat can be estimated. Other data that are taken into account are the visibility, situation of the sea, floating objects near, although all information that the observer considers relevant can be pointed out. Contact with marine mammals and turtles is also noted.

Currently several companies have an agreement with SPEA and allow an observer to board their boats in order to carry out these marine censuses, these are Ventura, VMT and Lobo Marinho.

My name is Abelardo and I’m a Biology student at the university of Granada, I love nature and animals since I was a child.

During 2016 I was working as field assistant through the Project: "Biotic and abiotic determinants of spatio-temporal variation in parasite-host interactions"(CGL2014-55969-P), awarded to the CSIC and the University of Granada. This project took place in the Natural and National Park of Sierra Nevada (Granada, Spain), my work consist of: monitoring and control of passerine in nest-boxes, taking morphological measures and sampling and parasite count (Protocalliphora azurea).

During 2016/2017 from October to March I work as an intern in Padul’s ornithological station and in “Sierra Nevada Natural S.L”.  I carried out works such as guide and nature monitor in Sierra Nevada and in the Padul’s wetlands.

I was wanting to travel abroad in order to collaborate with others conservation projects, so the opportunity to work in SPEA Madeira is like a dream come true, here I’m going to work in the Project Life Fura-bardos and in other task that I could help.

Educação ambiental nas escolas

Environmental education could be defined as "An educational process that deals with the relationship of man to his natural and artificial environment." It consists of recognizing values and clarifying concepts with the aim of understanding and appreciating the interrelations between man, his culture and his biophysical environment. It includes practice in decision-making and in the elaboration of a code of behaviour with a view to improving life and protecting the environment, paying due attention to ethical values.

From what I observed during my stay in Madeira the last two months I believe that SPEA's role in environmental education in schools throughout the island is fundamental. They teaches the children in a very dynamic way intercalating lectures, games and workshops not only on the birds of the archipelago, but also on its surroundings and the natural wealth of the whole island from a vision of conservation and environmental respect. They show the reality of how our intervention in nature through pollution, the introduction of exotic plants and excessive use of resources, among many others, have a very negative impact that pressures many species of animals and plants and pushes them to their extinction.

In my opinion one of the most important tools for environmental protection is environmental education, teaching children what nature offers us and why we must protect it and the consequences of our actions, which we often do without thinking, like throwing a simple wrap to the sea. In short, we need to create an education to make the population aware of the environment and be interested in it and its problems and have the knowledge and motivation to work individually and collectively in the search for solutions to current environmental problems and to prevent those that may appear in the future.

SPEA goes to your school or community centre to carry out initiatives on nature and educate the new generations for the conservation and protection of nature! Contact us: madeira@spea.pt
