Primeiros dias na SPEA

Assim que desembaquei em SPEA, eles me fizeram uma primeira proposta impossível de recusar, colaborar nos dias RAM (Rede de observação de aves e mamíferos marinhos) no porto Moniz. Aquela manhã de sábado não só tive meu primeiro contato com as aves marinhas na ilha, mas também ao longo do caminho, pude apreciar a paisagem e as vistas da ponta noroeste da ilha, enquanto a Laura, técnica da SPEA, deu-me a conhecer um pouco mais da cultura e história da Madeira, bem como da SPEA. Durante o censo RAM, observámos freiras, cagarras, almas-negras e eu aprendi a distingui-los pelo comportamento de vôo. Até uma baleia se apareceu me dar boas-vindas e nos recompensar que acordamos cedo um sábado.

Ainda em curso de adaptação, a primeira semana era bastante variada entre trabalho de escritório, dia de voluntariado para a recuperaçâo de areas queimadas no Parque ecológico de Funchal e a coisa principal; os censos de aves marinhas como parte do projeto Luminaves. As espécies mais comuns detectadas até agora nesses censos são cagarras e roque de castro. Embora, normalmente não falta a visita de outros animais curiosos como garças, corujas, francelhos, morcegos e humanos.

Bem, embora eu já explicarei em o que consistem estas tardes de censo, por agora eu o deixo com algumas das imagens mais representativas. Uma boa maneira de aproveitar o pôr do sol de lugares privilegiados que por outro lado, eu duvido que eu teria vindo por mim.

Para terminar, o passado 18 de outubro teve a ocasião de assistir a um evento muito importante para nossa organização, a apresentação pública do projeto Luminaves e a campanha "Salve uma ave marinha”no Auditório da Secretaria Regional do Ambiente e Recursos Naturais.

Este seria o momento para dar mais detalhes deste projeto já quase famoso para os leitores... Porém eles terão que esperar até a próxima semana, que será quando dedico um artigo exclusivamente a este projeto e eu espero resolver todas as dúvidas.

First days at SPEA

As soon as I disembarked in SPEA, they made me one first proposal impossible to refuse, to collaborate in the RAM census (Network of observation of birds and marine mammals) in Porto Moniz. That Saturday morning I not only had my first contact with the seabirds of the island, also along the way, I was able to appreciate the landscape and the views of the north-western of the island, while my partner Laura, made me know a little more about the Madeira's history and its culture as well as SPEA. During the RAM census, we observed Zino's Petrel, Cory's shearwater, Bulwer's petrel, and I learned how to distinguish them by flying behavior. Even a whale appeared to give me the welcome and reward us for waking up early on a Saturday.

Still in adaptation process, the first week was quite varied among office work, a volunteer day for the recovery of habitats burned in Funchal Ecological Park and the main thing; the census of seabirds as part of Luminaves project. The most common species detected so far in these censuses are Cory's shearwater (with their dissident sing between male and female) and Band-rumperd storm petrel. However, it usually does not miss the visit of other curious animals such as egrets, owls, kestrels, bats and humans.

Well, although I will explain how theses afternoons of censuses work, for now I leave you with some of the most representative images. A good way to enjoy the sunset from privileged places, wich on the other hand, I doubt I would have arrived by myself .

 

Finally, last October 18 I had the opportunity to attend a very important event for our organization, the public presentation of the project Luminaves and the campaign "Save a sea bird" in the Auditorium of the Regional Secretariat of Environment and Natural Resources. 
This would be the moment to give more details of this almost famous project for the readers, but you will have to wait until next week,  which will be when I dedicate an article exclusively to this project and I hope you will get resolved all doubts.
