Nos dias 2 e 3 de abril, decorreu o Censo de Mantas de 2022, nas ilhas dos Açores e da Madeira, com a participação dos membros da SPEA e dos nossos voluntários, que se inscreveram para esta iniciativa.
As más condições meteorológicas tornaram a observação impossível nesses dias e dificultaram o trabalho de alguns dos voluntários, obrigando a prolongar o evento até 10 de abril, para que todos pudessem participar. O mesmo aconteceu comigo, tive de adiar os meus planos do censo para outro dia, porém o bom tempo permitiu que o fizéssemos na semana seguinte, até domingo.
No segundo fim-de-semana de abril, fiz a contagem das mantas e acabei por escolher fazer um percurso a pé pela Levada do Norte, uma levada com um total de 6 km. Este teve início na freguesia do Estreito de Câmara de Lobos e com finalidade no Cabo Girão.
Um lugar onde reflete todas as cores da natureza, as ribeiras límpidas, com paisagem para as montanhas e para os campos agrícolas.
Com recurso a um GPS, o material do censo à mão e com a mochila às costas, pus-me a caminho. Foi uma experiência única, uma oportunidade de estar um pouco comigo própria e em harmonia com a natureza.
No começo foi difícil, não havia qualquer sinal de presença de mantas naquela localidade ou arredores, porém, mais adiante, consegui identificar a primeira manta. A poucos quilómetros desta, reparei que havia um bando de aves a vocalizar e a sobrevoar os campos agrícolas, veio-me longo à ideia de que eram mantas. No resto do percurso não foi possível identificar mais nenhuma, ficando com um total de 5 mantas observadas!
Qualquer cidadão que esteja interessado pode participar neste censo, sendo que basta saber identificar uma espécie. Esta é uma iniciativa importante para sabermos mais sobre esta ave emblemática e para que a possamos proteger das várias ameaças existentes.
On 2 and 3 April, the 2022 Census of Mantas took place in the Azores and Madeira islands, with the participation of SPEA members and our volunteers, who signed up for this initiative.
Bad weather conditions made observation impossible on those days and hindered the work of some of the volunteers, forcing us to extend the event until April 10, so that everyone could participate. The same happened to me, I had to postpone my census plans to another day, however the good weather allowed us to do it the following week, until Sunday.
On the second weekend in April, I did the blanket count and ended up choosing to do a Levada walk along the Levada do Norte, a levada with a total length of 6 km. It started in the parish of Estreito de Câmara de Lobos and finished in Cabo Girão.
A place that reflects all the colours of nature, the limpid streams, with a view of the mountains and the agricultural fields.
At first it was difficult, there was no sign of any mantas in or around that place, but further on I managed to identify the first manta. A few kilometres from it I noticed a flock of birds vocalising and flying over the farm fields, it came to my mind that they were mantas. On the rest of the walk, it was not possible to identify any more, leaving a total of 5 mantas observed!
Any citizen who is interested can participate in this census, being enough to know how to identify a species. This is an important initiative for us to know more about this emblematic bird and to protect it from the several existing threats.
