Due to the celebration of the international day of the volunteer on the past 5th of December, we would like to share our experience as volunteers of SPEA-Madeira. Coming from Spain and Italy, we arrived full of energy to work in this organization. We took part in many actions linked with birds’ and habitats’ conservation of Madeira. Boat-based observations, land-based censos, night listening, bird monitoring, nests’ searching, fieldwork, outdoors activities in islands and islets, environmental sensitization and education: these are few examples of the activities we participated in during our time as volunteers.

I think that at a certain point in our lives everyone has volunteered, taking part in some actions. In my case the experience lived as SPEA’s volunteer is unforgettable. I had exceptional opportunities and developed professional experience; I think this is the right way to create the feedback between the volunteer and the entity, as both parts receive mutual benefits during their work. The profits of my experience were remarkable, marine census, nocturnal listening, shearwaters’ monitoring, campaign “rescue a shearwater”, education and environmental sensitization, etc. and in addition I had the opportunity to know pristine natural spaces like Selvagens Island. I encourage people to volunteer and be committed with our society, as we can all take advantage with it. I would just like to say few words, thank you so much SPEA, it is always a pleasure!
Antonio:
My experience as a volunteer started in Malta in 2013 and keeps going on now in Madeira. In both occasions I had the possibility to volunteer for two environmental NGOs which are committed for the protection of the birds and their habitats. The knowledge and the experience I gained and the places I’ve been living in helped me to expand my personal and professional horizons. Working for SPEA has been since the very first moment a pleasure and a great stimulus: whit all the projects this NGOs is promoting, we had the opportunity to see stunning natural places and admire the wild nature. Volunteering is a great way to give and receive, fighting for something we believe in and improving our surroundings. Thank you very much SPEA for the unforgettable experience!
