Hoje, venho falar-vos sobre os esforços de monitorização nas colónias de cagarras em Santana. Durante todo o mês de agosto, a equipa da SPEA realizou uma missão noturna dedicada à monitorização de uma colónia de cagarras. Estas noites foram repletas de tarefas essenciais, incluindo a colocação, troca e recuperação de dispositivos GPS e GLS em cagarras que habitam essa colónia. Conheça esta metodologia aqui.

Estes dispositivos desempenham um papel crucial na obtenção de informações sobre o comportamento das cagarras durante esta época do ano, revelando informações como as áreas em que as aves se alimentam, a trajetória que seguem e se estão expostas a fatores que as afetam, como a poluição luminosa.

No entanto, a nossa equipa também notou desafios significativos para as aves ao longo desta experiência. Essas ameaças incluem predadores terrestres introduzidos, como gatos, o uso humano dessas áreas, como para pesca e outras atividades de lazer, a potencial captura ilegal de crias e a poluição luminosa na costa e no mar, que pode afetar as aves adultas nos trajetos de alimentação desde e para o ninho.

Uma preocupação adicional é o risco enfrentado pelos juvenis quando deixam os ninhos. A intensa iluminação pública pode desorientá-los, levando a colisões com edifícios, postes de luz e até carros. Estes incidentes podem resultar em ferimentos graves e, em casos mais graves, até morte. As aves sobreviventes, por sua vez, podem ter dificuldade em levantar voo e muitas vezes necessitam de assistência.

Desde 2009, a SPEA vem conduzindo a campanha "Salve uma Ave Marinha" com sucesso. Esta iniciativa tem como objetivo sensibilizar a população para os perigos da poluição luminosa, incentivando a redução da emissão de luz e fornecendo orientações sobre como prestar auxílio às aves desorientadas.

O impacto positivo da campanha tem sido amplificado pelo apoio de voluntários, que desempenham um papel crucial no resgate e na posterior libertação das aves marinhas no mar.

Today I'm here to inform you about the monitoring efforts at the Cory's shearwater colonies in Santana. Throughout August, the SPEA team carried out a night mission dedicated to monitoring a Cory's shearwater colony. These nights were filled with important tasks, including the placement, exchange and recovery of GPS and GLS devices on the shearwaters that inhabit the colony. These devices play a crucial role in obtaining information about the Cory's shearwater behaviour during this time of year, revealing information such as the areas in which the birds feed, the trajectory they follow and whether they are exposed to factors that affect them, such as light pollution.

However, our team also noticed significant challenges for the birds throughout this experiment. These threats include introduced terrestrial predators such as cats, human use of these areas such as for fishing and other leisure activities, the potential illegal capture of chicks and light pollution on the coast and at sea, which can affect adult birds on their feeding routes to and from the nest.

An additional concern is the risk faced by juveniles when they leave their nests. The intense street lighting can disorientate them, leading to collisions with buildings, streetlights and even cars. These incidents can result in serious injuries and, in more severe cases, even death. The surviving birds, meanwhile, may have difficulty taking off and often need assistance.

Since 2009, SPEA has been successfully running the "Save a Seabird" campaign. This initiative aims to raise public awareness of the dangers of light pollution, encouraging the reduction of light emitted and providing guidance on how to help disorientated birds.

The positive impact of the campaign has been amplified by the support of volunteers, who play a key role in the rescue and subsequent release of seabirds into the sea.
