Hello from Madeira

Oi!

Eu sou a Sonia, tenho 24 anos e venho da Itália. Estudo Ciências Naturais em Bolonha e fiz a licenciatura em Biologia. Cresci nos Alpes, sempre rodeada pela natureza, e foi aí que nasceu a minha paixão por ela. À medida que fui crescendo, percebi o quanto as alterações climáticas estão a afetar o equilíbrio dos ecossistemas, e foi por isso que decidi dedicar os meus estudos à conservação e monitorização da flora e da fauna.

Gosto especialmente do ecossistema dos Alpes e das altas montanhas, mas para o meu mestrado decidi investigar e aprofundar os meus conhecimentos sobre algo muito diferente: o ecossistema particular da Madeira, que é único e bastante diverso daquilo a que estou habituada. Fascina-me a combinação entre montanha e oceano, e tenho muita curiosidade em conhecer a biodiversidade que estas condições específicas criaram. Ao visitar a ilha nos últimos dias, já fiquei impressionada com o microclima formado pela floresta da Laurissilva e pelas falésias íngremes de São Vicente.

Durante os meus estudos descobri que algumas espécies da Madeira estão ameaçadas, especialmente aves como a Calonectris borealis, e decidi participar nos projetos STOPpredators e NatureAtNight para ter a oportunidade de aprofundar os meus estudos e contribuir para a conservação destas aves.

Nos próximos meses participarei principalmente no projeto STOPpredators e estou muito entusiasmada sobretudo com o trabalho de campo. Ao longo do meu percurso académico em Bolonha não tive muitas oportunidades de prática no terreno, pois foquei-me mais no conhecimento teórico, e agora estou feliz por finalmente poder aplicar o que estudei nos livros e estar em contacto direto com a natureza. Graças a este estágio, terei a oportunidade de combinar duas das minhas maiores paixões: a conservação animal e o trekking. Espero poder contribuir e compreender melhor a vida das aves marinhas da Madeira.

Também poderei escrever a minha tese de mestrado com base nos dados e conhecimentos que irei desenvolver nestes meses, e pretendo utilizar as competências adquiridas nos meus futuros trabalhos, talvez ligados a ecossistemas ameaçados em Itália.

Mal posso esperar que esta experiência comece!

Hi!

I am Sonia, I am 24 years old and I come from Italy. I study Natural Sciences in Bologna, and I did my bachelor’s degree in biology. I grew up in the Alps, I have always been surrounded by nature, and I became passionate about it. Becoming older I realized how much climate change is affecting the balance of ecosystems, and that is why I chose to dedicate my studies to conservation and monitoring flora and fauna.

I particularly enjoy Alps ecosystem and high mountains, but for my master’s degree I decided to investigate and gain more knowledge about something very different: the particular ecosystem of Madeira, which is unique and diverse from what I am used to. I am fascinated by the combination of mountains and ocean, and I am curious about the biodiversity that these specific conditions have created: visiting the island in the past few days I have already been amazed by the microclimate formed by Laurissilva forest and by the steep cliffs of São Vicente.

During my studies I discovered that some species of Madeira are endangered, particularly bird species like Calonectris borealis, and I decided to take part in the project STOPpredators and NatureAtNight to have the opportunity to deepen my studies and help in the conservation of these birds.

During the next few months I will be participating mainly in the STOP predators project and I am very excited mostly about the field work: throughout my academic journey in Bologna I didn’t have the chance to practice in the field, I focused more on theory knowledge, and I am happy to finally apply what I studied on books and be in contact with the nature. Thanks to this internship I’ll have the opportunity to combine two of my biggest passions, animal conservation and hiking, and I hope to be able to help and understand better the life of Maderia seabirds.

I’ll also be able to write my master thesis with the data and knowledge that I will develop in these months, and I intend to use the acquired skills and competences in my future jobs, maybe involving endangered ecosystems in Italy.

I can’t wait for this experience to start!
