Estadia nas Ilhas Selvagens

Lindo lugar...

Durante este mês tive a oportunidade de fazer uma estadia de três semanas nas Ilhas Selvagens, o território mais meridional do estado português.

As Ilhas Selvagens são Reserva Natural desde 1971, uma das mais antigas de Portugal. Está formada por duas ilhas, a Selvagem Grande e a Selvagem Pequena, e alguns ilhéus. Este sub-arquipélago da Madeira é nomeado como o santuário das aves, pois lá nidificam varias espécies de aves, com a importância que algumas delas são endémicas. Também a sua situação geográfica faz que algumas aves utilizem as ilhas para descansar nos seus voos migratórios. 

Das especiais espécies que há nas Selvagens, poder-se-ia destacar a cagarra (Calonectris diomedea). São nas Selvagens onde esta espécie tem a maior colónia a nível mundial. Como se de uma cidade cheia de hotéis e apartamentos se tratasse, a Selvagem Grande, está “urbanizada” por ninhos de cagarras. Ainda que fevereiro não é o mês com mais número de indivíduos, já estavam a chegar à ilha com o objetivo de acasalar e preparar os seus ninhos para a futura postura.

Além da biodiversidade tão exclusiva que têm as Selvagens, estas ilhas contam com um recurso que poucos lugares têm. Um recurso abstrato ao mesmo tempo que palpável, pois a sensação de isolamento, tranquilidade, vida atemporal,… são sensações que batem forte e positivamente na pele dos que pernoitam neste território. A ausência de sintomas de humanismo, o barulho contínuo do mar, e a biodiversidade na sua total vontade, fazem deste lugar um espaço espetacular e único...

This month I had the opportunity to take a three week stay in the Selvagem Islands, the southernmost territory of the Portuguese state.

The Selvagem Islands are nature reserve since 1971, one of the oldest in Portugal. Is formed by two islands, the Selvagem Grande and Selvagem Pequena, and some islets. These islands are named as the sanctuary of birds, with the importance that some of them are endemic. Also its geographical situation makes some birds use the islands for resting on their migratory flights.

We can highlight the shearwater (Calonectris diomedea). Here is where this species has the largest colony in the world. As a city full of hotels and apartments it was, the Selvagem Grande is "urbanized" by nesting shearwaters. Although February is not the month with the most number of individuals, were already coming to the island in order to mate and prepare their nests for future posture.

Besides the unique biodiversity as having the Selvagens, these islands have a resource that few places have. An abstract resource while palpable, because the feeling of isolation, tranquility, timeless life ... are sensations that beat strongly and positively in the skin of who stay in this territory. The absence of symptoms of humanism, the continuous noise of the sea, and biodiversity in its total will make this place a spectacular and unique space...
