Censos Luminaves

Estas últimas semanas, a equipa da SPEA Madeira tem ido para o terreno realizar censos de aves marinhas por variados pontos à volta da ilha. De todos os pontos onde estive, o que mais gostei foi no Caniçal. Ainda tivemos de andar um bom bocado para chegar ao local exacto e por pouco não falhámos o sítio porque o caminho, supostamente, dividia-se em dois e tínhamos de seguir o que estava mais perto do mar, mas por causa da altura da vegetação quase não o encontrámos. Tivemos de andar para a frente e para trás na tentativa de encontrá-lo e só o conseguimos fazer com a ajuda do GPS.

Quando lá chegamos ficámos deslumbrados com a paisagem e, logo depois de montarmos todo o equipamento, começámos a tirar fotografias a tudo o que nos rodeava. Não esquecendo a importância do censo propriamente dito, as paisagens são o que mais me motivam a embarcar nestas saídas. São elas que me dão a oportunidade de conhecer lugares que, se calhar, muitos nunca visitaram.

Conforme se vai aproximando a hora do pôr-do-sol vamos ficando cada vez mais ansiosos. Ainda faltam cinco minutos e eu já estou com os auscultadores postos e pronta para começar. São duas horas a ouvir aves, sem podermos falar nem fazer barulho para que a gravação não fique comprometida. Nesta saídas apenas temos ouvido Cagarras e temos tido muita sorte em podermos vê-las bem perto de nós. Por vezes, torna-se difícil fazer a sua contagem porque chegam muitas de uma vez e ficamos atrapalhados, mas daqui a um tempo, com mais experiência, acredito que vou conseguir contá-las devidamente. Uma coisa que acho engraçado é que em todas as saídas de campo temos a oportunidade de ver sempre o navio Lobo Marinho a regressar à Madeira, mesmo antes do cair da noite.

Terminado o censo, começamos a desmontar e a arrumar o material, com mais ou menos pressa, consoante o frio e seguimos pelo mesmo caminho por onde viemos até o carro, onde nos reunimos com os nossos colegas para partilharmos os dados que recolhemos e é no dia seguinte que ouvimos de novo as gravações para tirar alguma dúvida e lançar os dados no computador.

These last few weeks, the SPEA team has gone to the field to carry out censuses of seabirds in different places around the island. Of all the places I have been, the one I liked the most was in Caniçal. We had a bit of a walk before getting to the right spot and we almost missed it because the path was supposedly split in two and we hab to go trhough the one closest to the sea, but because of the height of the vegetation we had a though time finding it. We had to walk back and forth in an attempt to find it an we were only able to do it with the help of GPS.

When we finally got there, we were dazzled by the scenery and soon after we set up all the equipment, we began taking photographs of everything around us. Not forgetting the importance of the census itself, the landscapes are what most motivate me to enroll on theses field trips. They are the ones that give me the opportunity to see places that perhaps, many have never visited.

As the sunset time draws near, we become more and more anxious. There is still five minutes to go and I have already got my headphones on and I'm ready start. It is two hours listening to birds, without being able to speak or make noise so that the recording is not compromised. In theses field trips we have only heard Cory's Shearwater and we have been lucky to be able to see them very close to us. Sometimes, it becomes difficult to count them because they come many at a time and we get confused, but a while from now, with more experience, I believe I will be able to count them properly. One thing I find funny is that at all field trips we have the opportunity to always see the ship “Lobo Marinho” come back to Madeira before nightfall.

After the census is over, we start dismantling and packing all the material, more or less hurriedly, depending on the cold, and we go back trhough the same path all the way to the car, where we gather with our colleagues to share the data we collected and it is in the next day that we listen back to the tapes to make sure everything is in order and put that information on the computer.
