Censo de aves comuns (CAC)

The census of common birds is one of the many activities carried out by SPEA Madeira, is held twice a year, one in April and one in May.

 It consists of visiting 20 previously selected points, which represents different types of habitats. The methodology is: In the same day all the points are visited between sunrise and the next 4 hours, we remain 5 minutes at each point and record all the species seen and heard, indicating if this species are located in a radius of Less than 25 m or if it are more distant.

The main objectives of this project are:

- Obtain information on the population variations of a wide range of nesting bird species in Portugal and calculate their specific indices annually, indicating the variation of abundance compared to the initial year;

- Create and distribute the "Common Bird Index", which includes all species, as well as their annual update;

- Calculate indices composed of groups of species associated with the main habitat types in Portugal, namely agriculture and forestry;

- Contributing annually to the Pan-European Common Bird Monitoring Scheme (PECBMS), with data on the population trends of Portuguese species;

- Promote the conservation of birds and their habitats through the direct involvement of large numbers of volunteers in critical bird monitoring projects.

Moreover, thanks to this activity I enjoyed the beautiful landscapes presented in  Madeira, and also has expanded my knowledge of birds. Moreover,  I’m glad to have do my bit to help in such an interesting project.

O Censo de Aves Comuns (CAC) é uma das muitas actividades que leva a cabo SPEA Madeira, é realizada duas vezes por ano, uma em abril e outra em maio. 

O CAC consiste em visitar 20 pontos pré-selecionados que  representam os diferentes tipos de habitats. A metodologia é a seguinte: Em um dia visitamos todos os pontos entre o amanhecer e 4 horas, em cada ponto permanecer  5 minutos e registamos todas as espécies vitas e ouvido.

Os principais objetivos deste projeto são:

- Obter informação sobre as variações populacionais de um vasto conjunto de espécies de aves nidificantes em Portugal e calcular anualmente os respetivos índices específicos, que indicam a variação da abundância relativamente ao ano inicial;

- Criar e divulgar o “Índice de Aves Comuns”, que inclua a generalidade das espécies, bem como bem como a sua atualização anual;

- Calcular índices compostos por grupos de espécies associadas aos principais tipos de habitat em Portugal, nomeadamente agrícola e florestal;

- Contribuir anualmente para o Esquema Pan-Europeu de Monitorização de Aves Comuns (PECBMS), com os dados das tendências populacionais das espécies portuguesas;

- Promover a conservação das aves e dos seus habitats através do envolvimento direto de um grande número de voluntários em projetos decisivos de monitorização de aves.

Variação dos índices entre 2004 e 2011, expressos em percentagem, para as espécies que compõem o Índice de Aves Comuns da Madeira (IACM) (os valores positivos indicam aumentos populacionais e os negativos indicam decréscimos).

Também, através desta atividade eu gostei das belas paisagens que caracterizam a Madeira, também eu aumentei  o meu conhecimento sobre aves, ademais  estou muito feliz de contribuir com um projeto tão interessante.
