Environmental education could be defined as
"An educational process that deals with the relationship of man to his
natural and artificial environment." It consists of recognizing values
and clarifying concepts with the aim of understanding and appreciating the
interrelations between man, his culture and his biophysical environment. It
includes practice in decision-making and in the elaboration of a code of behaviour
with a view to improving life and protecting the environment, paying due
attention to ethical values.
From what I observed during my stay in Madeira
the last two months I believe that SPEA's role in environmental education in
schools throughout the island is fundamental. They teaches the children in a
very dynamic way intercalating lectures, games and workshops not only on the
birds of the archipelago, but also on its surroundings and the natural wealth
of the whole island from a vision of conservation and environmental respect.
They show the reality of how our intervention in nature through pollution, the
introduction of exotic plants and excessive use of resources, among many others,
have a very negative impact that pressures many species of animals and plants
and pushes them to their extinction.
In my opinion one of the most important tools
for environmental protection is environmental education, teaching children what
nature offers us and why we must protect it and the consequences of our
actions, which we often do without thinking, like throwing a simple wrap to the
sea. In short, we need to create an education to make the population aware of
the environment and be interested in it and its problems and have the knowledge
and motivation to work individually and collectively in the search for
solutions to current environmental problems and to prevent those that may
appear in the future.

A educação ambiental poderia ser definida como "um processo
educacional que lida com a relação do homem com seu ambiente natural e
artificial". Consiste em reconhecer valores e esclarecer conceitos com o
objetivo de compreender e apreciar as inter-relações entre o homem, sua cultura
e seu ambiente biofísico. Inclui a prática na tomada de decisões e na
elaboração de um código de comportamento com vista a melhorar a vida e a
proteger o ambiente, prestando a devida atenção aos valores éticos.
Do que observei durante a minha estadia na Madeira nos últimos dois meses,
creio que o papel da SPEA na educação ambiental nas escolas em toda a ilha é
fundamental. Ensina as crianças de forma muito dinâmica intercalando palestras,
jogos e ateliers, não só sobre as aves do arquipélago, mas também sobre os seus
arredores e as riquezas naturais de toda a ilha a partir de uma visão de
conservação e respeito ambiental. Mostram a realidade de como a nossa
intervenção na natureza através da poluição, a introdução de plantas exóticas e
o uso excessivo de recursos, entre muitos outros, têm um impacto muito negativo
que pressiona muitas espécies nativas de animais e plantas e as empurra para a
sua extinção.
Na minha opinião, uma das ferramentas mais importantes para a proteção
ambiental é a educação ambiental, ensinando às crianças o que a natureza nos
oferece e por que devemos protegê-lo e as consequências de nossas ações, que
muitas vezes fazemos sem pensar, como jogar um simples embrulho ao mar. Em resumo, temos de criar
uma educação para sensibilizar a população para o ambiente e estar interessado
nela e os seus problemas e ter o conhecimento e a motivação para trabalhar
individual e colectivamente na procura de soluções para os problemas ambientais
atuais e para evitar aqueles que possam aparecer no futuro.
A SPEA vai à sua escola, casa do povo ou centro comunitário realizar
iniciativas sobre a natureza e educar as novas gerações para a conservação e proteção
