Ilhas Selvagens

As Ilhas Selvagens são a mais antiga reserva de Portugal e o local mais a sul do território português e estão localizadas a sudeste da ilha da Madeira.

Tive o privilégio de poder conhece las incorporando a equipa SPEA Madeira no projeto MISTIC SEAS II que consiste na monitorização de aves marinhas nesta ilhas.

As ilhas selvagens são um autêntico santuário e é magnífica a quantidade de aves que pude observar, aves marinhas como o Calcamar (Pelagodroma marina), Cagarra (Calonectris borealis), Pintainho (Puffinus Lherminieri), Alma-negra (Bulweria bulwerii), Roque de Castro (Hydrobates castro), Rola-do-mar (Arenaria interpres) entre outras aves como Corre- caminhos (Anthus bertheloti bertheloti), Milhafre Preto (Milvus migrans), Garça-pequena-branca (Egretta garzetta), Maçarico-galego (Numenius phaeopus), Rola-brava (Streptopelia turtur), Andorinha-dos-beirais (Delichon urbicum) e Andorinha-das-chaminés (Hirundo rustica).

Pode também ver os únicos dois répteis destas ilhas, Osga das selvagens (Tarentola bischoffi) e a Lagartixa (Teira dugesii selvagensis) e conhecer alguma fauna da ilha como a Scilla maderensis Menezes var. melliodora svent.,  Monanthes lowei  e Limonium papillatum var. callibotryum.

A estadia nas ilhas selvagens durou 16 dias, e foram 16 dias de aprendizagem sobre fauna e flora da ilha, pois todos os dias explorávamos um pouco daquele santuário que é as ilhas selvagens.

A equipa teve oportunidade de cooperar com vigilantes da natureza nos seus trabalhos de rotina nas selvagens, como por exemplo remoção da Tabaqueira (Nicotiana glauca) entre outros trabalhos e mostram se totalmente disponíveis para nos mostrar todos os cantinhos destas ilhas.

Foi uma experiência incrível, que guardarei sempre, e espero um dia poder voltar este pequeno paraíso no meio do Atlântico.

The Selvagens Islands are Portugal’s oldest reserve and the most southern place of the Portuguese territory and are located to the southeast of Madeira island.

I had the privilege to visit them with another member of the SPEA Madeira team for the MISTIC SEAS II project, which consists of monitoring seabirds on these islands.

The Selvagens Islands are an authentic sanctuary and the number of birds I was able to see was amazing. I saw seabirds such as the White-faced Storm Petrel (Pelagodroma marina),

Cory's Shearwater (Calonectris borealis), Audubon's Shearwater (Puffinus Lherminieri), Bulwer's Petrel (Bulweria bulwerii), Band-rumped Storm-petrel (Hydrobates castro), Ruddy Turnstone (Arenaria interpres), among other birds, such as Berthelot’s Pipit Anthus bertheloti bertheloti), Black kites (Milvus migrans), Little Egret (Egretta garzetta), whimbrel (Numenius phaeopus), European turtle dove (Streptopelia turtur), Northern House Martin (Delichon urbicum) and Barn Swallow (Hirundo rustica).

I was also able to see the only two reptiles on these islands, the Selvagens Wall Gecko

 (Tarentola bischoffi) and the Selvagens Lizard (Teira dugesii selvages). Also got to know some fauna of the island like Scilla maderensis Menezes var. melliodora svent., Monanthes lowei and Limonium papillatum var. callibotryum.

I stayed in the Selvagens Islands for 16 days and each and every day I learned something about the fauna and flora of the island, because every day we explored a little of this sanctuary.

The team had the opportunity to cooperate with nature vigilantes in their routine work, such as removing Tree Tobacco (Nicotiana glauca) among other chores and they made themselves fully available to show us all the corners of these islands.

It was an incredible experience that I will never forget and one day I hope to be able to return to this little paradise in the middle of the Atlantic.
