As Ilhas Incríveis

L'últim mes vaig tenir l'oportunitat d'anar a les Illes Desertas amb SPEA durant quatre dies a fer pràctiques, i l'estada ha estat inoblidable.

El nostre viatge va començar amb el vaixell que ens portava fins allà. Durant els viatges d'anada i tornada vam tenir l'oportunitat de veure moltes aus marines: Calonectris borealis, Bulweria bulwerii, Puffinus puffinus i Pterodroma deserta, el que va fer l'experiència encara més emocionant. Un cop allà ens vam instal·lar i vam anar a dormir.

Durant els següents dies vaig dur a terme diferents mètodes de comptatge de nius, plots i anellaments. Durant el dia fèiem tres coses: per una part comprovàvem i comptàvem el nombre de nius de Calonectris borealis i Bulweria bulweri per veure si estaven ocupats i quina era la grandària aproximada de la colònia; per una altra part, fèiem els plots, que consistia a agafar un cercle d'un radi de 10 i contar tots els nius que hi havia en l'interior del cercle; i, en últim lloc, també agafàvem les Calonectris borealis i els hi retiràvem GPS que s'havien instal·lat anteriorment.

Durant la nit fèiem anellaments de Bulweria bulweri, de forma que vaig poder aprendre de primera mà a anellar aus marines.

Ja l'últim dia em vaig acomiadar de Deserta Grande i vaig marxar en vaixell cap a Funchal, on vaig tornar a veure les aus marines i una família de zífids de Blainville.

Cal recalcar que el paratge de les illes era impressionant, en l'illa es podia veure com el magma havia recorregut per la pedra fa milions d'anys i com les espècies tant vegetals com animals s'havien adaptat a un paratge rocós i àrid.

Aquest viatge ha estat impressionant i és un lloc que mai oblidaré i que algun dia hi tornaré, a reveure Illes Desertas 👋!

Last month, I had the opportunity to go to the Desertas Islands with SPEA for a four-day internship, and the experience was unforgettable.

Our journey began with the boat trip that took us there. During the outbound and return voyages, we had the opportunity to see many seabirds—Calonectris borealis, Bulweria bulwerii, Puffinus puffinus, and Pterodroma deserta—which made the experience even more exciting. Once there, we settled in and went to sleep.

Over the following days, I carried out various methods for counting nests and survey plots, as well as ringing activities. During the day, we performed three main tasks: first, we checked and counted the nests of Calonectris borealis and Bulweria bulweri to determine occupancy and estimate the colony's size; second, we conducted plot surveys, which involved selecting a circle with a 10-meter radius and counting all the nests within it; and finally, we handled Calonectris borealis individuals to retrieve GPS devices that had been previously attached.

At night, we carried out the ringing of Bulweria bulweri, so I was able to learn firsthand how to ring seabirds.

On the final day, I bade farewell to Deserta Grande and set off by boat for Funchal, where I once again saw seabirds and a family of Blainville's beaked whales.

It is worth noting that the setting of the islands was impressive; on the island, one could see how magma had flowed over the rock millions of years ago and how both plant and animal species had adapted to a rocky, arid landscape.

This trip has been amazing; it’s a place I’ll never forget and will return to someday. See you later, Desertas Islands! 👋
