Caracolando

Na passada semana, fomos ao Porto Santo para fazer o censo de aves marinhas a bordo do barco Lobo Marinho. Começámos o censo ao amanhecer, altura em que as aves estão mais ativas, e as que acompanharam a nossa viagem foram maioritariamente cagarras, mas também pudemos ver freiras. Gostei muito desta experiência e da brisa marinha na minha cara. 

Já no Porto Santo fomos ao aeroporto realizar a amostragem de invertebrados nas áreas adjacentes à pista. Foram muitos os caracóis e poucos os insetos descobertos com o método das quadrículas. No entanto, também colocámos as armadilhas pitfall para a posterior recolha e identificação de insetos. Depois do trabalho, e como a temperatura era boa, pudemos dar um mergulho nas águas turquesa da praia. Mergulho no mês de outubro! Não estou muito habituada a isso, mas acho que poderei habituar rapidamente.

Last week, we went to Port Santo to develop seabird census on board the Lobo Marinho ferry. We started the census at dawn, since birds are most active in the early morning, and we were mostly accompanied by Cory's Shearwaters, but we could also see Freiras. I enjoyed this experience a lot and also liked the feeling of the sea breeze on my face.

Once in Porto Santo, we went to the airport to begin with the invertebrate sampling across the area surrounding the runway. We found many snails but just a few insects by using the Quadrat method. However, we also placed the pitfall traps in order to later capture and identify insects. After work, and because the temperature was nice, we could go to the beach for a dip in the turquoise water. A dip on October! I’m not used to that, but I think I will be able to easily get used to it.
