Hola de nou a tothom!

Soc la Dana, una de les estudiants de l’institut d’ISBN que va realitzar una estada d'un mes a Madeira, d’Erasmus amb SPEA. 

Durant la nostra estada vam participar en diverses tasques relacionades amb dos projectes vigents a SPEA: el projecte #STOPPREDATORS i el projecte #LIFENATURENIGHT. 

Una part del treball, la vam dur a terme al camp, on vam poder observar de primera mà els mètodes científics que es fan servir per estudiar i protegir la fauna. Una de les activitats que vam poder realitzar de primera mà els 3 primers dies, va ser el mètode captura i recaptura, una tècnica que s'utilitza, en aquest cas, per estimar la mida de la població de rosegadors prop d’una de les colònies d’aus marines monitorades per SPEA. 

Seguidament, vam participar en el seguiment intensiu d'una colònia de Cagarres (Calonectris borealis), durant cinc dies. Aquesta activitat ens va permetre implicar-nos activament en tasques com la localització de nius, la verificació de l'èxit reproductor, la revisió d'equipaments geolocalitzadors actius en algunes d'aquestes aus i la revisió de les aus niades (pesatge, mesurament...). Gràcies a aquests aparells, els investigadors poden conèixer amb precisió les rutes migratòries de les aus i identificar possibles zones de risc, tant en el mar com a terra ferma. També vam col·laborar en la identificació de noves zones de nidificació i en la presa de dades ambientals rellevants per a l'estudi i la conservació de l'espècie.

Finalment, vam participar en algunes tasques més teòriques, com la creació de noves activitats d'educació ambiental relacionades amb els projectes vigents, la introducció de dades per tindre constància de l'observació d'aus en diferents zones de Madeira, la quantitat de col·laboradors que hi participen en aquest recull de dades o l'impacte que tenen els seus projectes a les xarxes socials d'altres entitats col·laboradores.

La veritat us he de dir que ha sigut una experiència total, una experiència que se sortia totalment de la meva zona de confort, he après i he conegut més sobre Madeira i sobre SPEA, tot i que m'hagués agradat fer més treball de camp, per logística no va ser possible, però els moments que vam viure a les muntanyes i el temps que vam passar amb els companys d'SPEA, crec que ens quedaran guardats per sempre.

Hello again, everyone!

I’m Dana, one of the students from the ISBN high school who took part in a one-month Erasmus placement in Madeira with SPEA.

During our stay, we participated in various tasks related to two ongoing projects at SPEA: the #STOPPREDATORS project and the #LIFENATURENIGHT project.

Part of our work took place in the field, where we had the opportunity to observe firsthand the scientific methods used to study and protect wildlife. One of the activities we carried out during the first three days was the capture-recapture method, a technique used—in this case—to estimate the size of the rodent population near one of the seabird colonies monitored by SPEA.

After that, we took part in the intensive monitoring of a colony of Cory’s Shearwaters (Calonectris borealis) for five days. This activity allowed us to get actively involved in tasks such as locating nests, checking breeding success, inspecting the geolocation devices attached to some of the birds, and monitoring the nesting birds themselves (weighing, measuring, etc.). Thanks to these devices, researchers can accurately track the birds migratory routes and identify potential risk areas, both at sea and on land. We also contributed to identifying new nesting areas and collecting relevant environmental data to support the study and conservation of the species.

Finally, we also participated in some more theoretical tasks, such as developing new environmental education activities related to the ongoing projects, entering data to record bird observations across different parts of Madeira, tracking the number of collaborators involved in data collection, and evaluating the impact of the projects on the social media platforms of partner organizations.

Honestly, I have to say it’s been a truly unforgettable experience—one that completely pushed me out of my comfort zone. I’ve learned a lot and discovered more about both Madeira and SPEA. Even though I would have liked to do more fieldwork, it wasn’t possible due to logistical reasons. Still, the moments we experienced in the mountains and the time spent with the SPEA team are memories I believe we will carry with us forever.
