A aventura começa!
Olá, recem cheguei à equipa - o meu nome é Teresa e hoje é o meu terciero dia cá na ensolarada ilha da Madeira. Que lugar tão lindo! Em primeiro lugar quero agradecer a toda a gente pelo acolhimento e a receção recebidos e por esta oportunidade. Estarei trabalhando com a SPEA durante 10 meses, no Serviço Voluntário Europeu. Sou da Inglaterra e esta é a primeira vez que visito Portugal, por tanto o meu português ainda está um pouco limitado. Mas este é um grande desafio, e confio que durante a minha estância melhorarei e tornarei-me mais confortável com a lingua.
Estudei conservação e biologia da fauna selvagem na universidade, e desde que acabei passei algum tempo trabalhando numa pequena ilha, reserva natural do Reino Unido, trabalhando principalmente com aves marinhas, pesquisas e turismo. Estou especialmente fascinada pelas aves marinhas procellariiformes. Por tanto, podem ver como é de importante para mim estar cá na Madeira, espero aprender e participar em atividades semelhantes, mas em um ambiente totalmente novo e diferente. Por exemplo, nos ultimos 6 meses estive a viver em Shetland-numa latitude similar ao sud da Groenlândia onde não há arvores, há um clima duro e uma alta sazonalidade. De forma que todas as coisas cá até agora são um grande contraste e um shock, mas um bom caminho! E isto é o que acredito será uma parte importante da grande experiência de aprendizagem do EVS.

The Adventure Begins!
Hello, I have just arrived into the team - my name is Teresa and it is only my third day here on the sunny island of Madeira. What a beautiful place! Firstly, a thank you to everyone involved for receiving me and for this opportunity. I will be here working here with SPEA for 10 months, through the European Voluntary Service. I am from England originally and it is my very first time visiting Portugal, so at the moment my Portuguese is quite limited. But it is an exciting challenge, and I hope that during my stay I will improve and become more comfortable with the language.
I have studied wildlife conservation and biology at university, and since graduating I have spent some time working on very small island nature reserves in the UK, working mainly with seabird surveys and tourism. I am especially fascinated by the Procellariiform seabirds – I love their crazy behaviours, calls, and their mysterious lifestyles. So you see it is very relevant for me to be here in Madeira, hopefully to learn and take part in similar activities, but in a totally new and different environment. For instance, in the last 6 months I have lived in Shetland – at a latitude similar to Southern Greenland where there are no trees, a harsh climate and a very pronounced seasonality. So everything here so far is a big contrast and quite a shock, but in a good way! And this is what I believe to be an important part of the whole EVS learning experience.
